Was the 2019 BMW xDrive 40i the jackbox of the latest X5s?
Just reading this forum, it seems to be that the 2019 BMW xDrive 40i was the jackbox of latest X5 BMWs.
- The 40i is a VERY capable engine that can certainly impresses in sports mode. The engine gets a whopping 26 miles per gallon. I drive from Tennessee to NE Ohio on one tank, and since I drive 4 miles to work, I fill up every 1-1.5 months if it's not busy. - Drivetrain reliability scores for this model are top notch. - The 2020 and above models suffered from COVID supply chain issues where the touch screen, soft close doors, and automatic tail hitch became options instead of standard. - The high end Bowers and Wilkens sound system was only available on the more expensive gas guzzling 50i V8 starting in 2020. I have it in my 2019 40i. - All other options available like ACC, driving assistant Pro. - Most flexible in terms of coding compared to newer models. - Still comes with tow hitch software. Does anyone else disagree on these points? This is my take after lurking here for a while. |

While many consider MY20 to be the best of the G05's there is not a lot of difference between them and MY19 so you could throw MY19 in the talk also.
Just for correction/clarification on your this point - "The 2020 and above models suffered from COVID supply chain issues where the touch screen, soft close doors, and automatic tail hitch became options instead of standard.": The touchscreen has always been standard. You may be thinking about the few week period where they were unavailable and replaced with non-touchscreens. The soft close doors and tow hitch never were standard and have always been options.

My 2020 has acoustic glass, heated and cooled cup holders, 4 door comfort access, and air suspension. Depending on the model and year, these options became unavailable. In addition, my car came standard with vibration dampers which no longer seem to exist.

Didn't the 19s have the issue with the B58 oil pump that led to catastrophic failure?
Not sure what you mean by Jackbox, but they're definitely not the best of the generation. |

They used some plastic parts in the oil pump. AS far as I know we have seen no failures. There are some folks that have a problem measuring the oil level but nothing with oil pressure that I can recall.

I could never say that a first year model is the "best". Some first model year issues they already know about and are working on resolving before the vehicle even launches. Others they don't know about until after launch, which can take an additional 1-2 model years to revise/redesign as needed and get into the supply chain and production line. I look at things from a design maturity perspective and not parts/options availability, and designs are usually optimal by the 3rd model year.

Options and features vs better reliability.
This is a bmw forum. People here have CLEARLY chosen features over reliability, lol. |

The 19 had all the features but some warts as a first year model. 20 was a better year with all of those features. Personally I like the 23 model for reliability but not for features as they were hit or miss. Hopefully BMW will work out the kinks with the LCI - especially the 50e.

The newer models list as better because they're newer, and the older ones worse because they're older. What you have to look for is if the newer models have less problems as they age than the older ones did when at the same age. They don't directly report that.
CR has published studies on this in the past, which is what has shown that for most makes, the 2nd year of a model is almost always significantly more reliable long-term than the first. 3rd years are usually about optimal with not much if any difference from that point and later, but depends on the manufacturer and general complexity of the vehicle. You're generally pretty safe with a 2nd/3rd year model if you care about long-term reliability. The best vehicles to buy are usually the "refresh" models where they add in planned features and enhancement to keep sales up, and typically have all of the major issues worked out by then. The G05 LCI is a rare case where you might want to think twice, due to problematic new tech being added, and other stuff that people don't necessarily want.

I had a 2019 x5 40i and when lease ended jumped into a 2022 x5 demo. The ‘22 felt more peppy and responsive. Whether was engine software upgrades or minor adjustments over course of the years, it was noticeable.

X5 40i introduced the 48v mild hybrid in 2021, so that is likely the difference you feel.

Does anybody know what the difference is between the 21-23(?) 48V mild hybrid system, and the 2024+? Is there a difference? It seemed like BMW was advertising the mild hybrid as some new feature for the 24/LCI, but it was already there. Was it updated? More eBoost or whatever?
