Ebay Black Grill Installed

So this was the easiest mod install I've ever done. Took me 30 seconds to remove the grill and front camera. In my E46 M3 days the freaking clips were so tight or maybe I just had even girlier hands back then.

Anyway, for the price of about $80USD this thing is well worth it. It came well packaged form China. Painted in a nice gloss black finish. Fits well and all the clips line up. It may be off center a mm or two but I can't tell. One thing is that the clips for the front camera aren't a perfect fit but it will hold the camera in just fine.

Sorry about the head turn pics. Not sure why that's happening.

Very nice.
I'm installing my black grill this weekend.
Hopefully it's as easy as you say.

Good job

Got mine from Taiwan back in November 2019, and the installation is pretty easy...

Just one piece of advice; maybe for others considering do this job, its worth using masking tape under the lower edge gaps and up the sides before removing the original grill and installing the new. The lower edge is slightly susceptible to scratching as you angle the grill out, and install the new.

Removal is really easy. You'll be ok. Just push down the 6 tabs on the top of the grill. Wiggle from one side to the other and pull out from the top first.
Took longer for me to get the front camera off as that was a bit tighter.

Good tip. It is a pretty tight fit so that makes good sense.
I was too excited and just went at it LOL

Yep, if you're really careful and take it out squarely you probably shouldn't need it, but the clips at the bottom can be tricky and tend to make you angle it just slightly.

I also found the quality of the grill from Taiwan good too. I was waiting around in the new car show-room at my local BMW dealer for my service to be finished back in December 2019, and checked out a few cars (X5 & X6's) that had the shadowline black grill, and the BMW OEM version both looked, felt (I think smelt..) the same - so very happy with mine off eBay. Wouldn't be surprised if the OEM version comes out of the same factory in Taiwan...

There's UK bmw dealership selling the genuine part for £230 delivered and I think it may be worth it for the piece of mind

Money not an issue I would always go OEM. But this was my first ever Ebay china part purchase and wanted to try it out. It was cheap enough that if the quality was sub par I would order OEM afterwards. My car is a lease anyway so it was worth it to me to give it a try,

Fair point

I did look online, think I was swayed by the delivery time.

OEM, this week vs June from China

BMW gets their parts from somewhere. Who is to say they don’t sub it out from Asia? Theses plastic grills are not a high skilled part to produce and designed to break apart on a impact.

I just got my OEM one from getbmwparts and it’s made in China. Haven’t installed it yet though.

OEM installs quickly like the others. Took the longest masking everything off and despite my best efforts it still found an exposed area and scraped it, but it polished out so no permanent harm done.

Anyone put the black grille with the tri-colour stripe? I wonder how it looks like on this big size grille

It's not the grille with built-in colour slats, but rather black grille with M-colour slat snap-on covers. Cheap and holding up well, but took a while to get the China vendors to send non-defective covers: 3 sets of returns, refunds, and then eventually got a good set from another vendor; took 2 months. When I put them on, I said to myself I'll see if I like them and jury was out then. Frankly, the jury is still out 10 months later, but too lazy to take them off, I guess :-).

Decided to take the M-colour slats off and see what a plain clean gloss black grille looks like overall for few months. Taking them off is a little tricky, so had to develop a tool to help: two old credit cards with a narrow hook-fold to slide in and grab the slat clips to pull out and away. Posting here to help anyone else that wants to take them off without any damage.
