Winter Tires - Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 vs Michelin X-Ice Snow
Anyone able to provide real world feedback on the differences between these two? Read a few blogs and they all say slightly different things. I'm in Alberta where we have a deep freeze after it snows, so ice is more of a consideration that wet snow. My tire guy is reccomending the XIce over the Alpins. I had the XIce on my 335 and found them quite noisy.

I have the Michelin Alpin for my F90 M5 and I love them. I drive in NYC and PA which typically gets a lot of snow. I love them. Never lost traction or slipped with them. Drove up and down hills in 6 inch snow storms without an issue. I plan to get them for my X5 as well.

Good post - trying to decide the same thing if I want to do the X-ICE Snow SUV ones for my X5. I’ve read lots of reviews that they aren’t very noisy at all. Curious if that’s the case. I’ve had the Conti VikingContact 7s on my Audi car and they were great, however, doesn’t seem like they make them the right size in the X5, sadly.

Pilot Alpins are a performance winter tire. X-Ice is a generic winter tire. If you run summer only tires (e.g. Pilot Super Sports, etc.) you will likely prefer Alpins. If you run all seasons, then you will probably prefer the X-Ice.

FWIW, it may also be worth checking out Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5’s. There are SUV and EV variants. I had an earlier version of these on my Tesla S P100DL which really needed good winter tires. They made a ton of difference and generally rank near the top of winter tire ratings.

No matter what, dedicated winter tires should be mandatory anywhere it gets below 30 degrees. They make you safer and the car will perform better across the driving spectrum. Why, oh why, do people spend absurd sums on ordinary (by 2023 standards) cars that will outperform the Ferrari I lusted after as a youth, yet they skimp out on two sets of tires. Ok, time to jump off my soapbox |

Aplin 5 SUV
I just had my winter set-up mounted and balanced. I went with the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV square set up on BMW 20" wheels. Have not installed yet but I can report back when I do. Tire looks decent on these wheels for a winter set.

My brand new 808Ms with Alpin 5s. First year with them on my 22F95 as they were not available when I purchased the car. Looking forward to some winter drifting…I mean driving.
Much softer ride than the summer 21/22 setup. Perhaps steering a bit ‘jittery’, especially in comfort steering selection. Have to be in sport with these on. They sure do look pretty good. Sort of a classic BMW double spoke.
