There's also the SQ5 which is a Macan S but without sociopaths making everything paid for options.

I drove the Alfa Stelvio... It's a joy to drive, look at, and hear. It's also tiny, but I felt like it had more practically useful space than X3.

All of this to say, unless you're trading out of Macan due to space issues, I wouldn't go X5, even though I love mine.

I may go to the X3 at some point, but right now the smaller size doesn't work for me. I gave up the Macan and a 3 row QX60 that I also owned to size right in the middle with the X5. Macan was too small, 3 rows isn't needed, so the X5 was the goldilocks middle. When I don't need the space of the X5, the X3 will be on my list to take a look at.

We are supposed to see the new x3 as a 2025 coming at some point next year.
Looking forward to see what they do with the M340i and X3MC.
I'd bet on seeing the expanded display and a power bump among other upgrades.

The G45 will start production in August. For the US there will be a 30x and an M50x. There will be a step up in Luxury and technology, matching the X5, but no new engines are planned. They could be offered with a higher one then current though.

Your last sentence - you meant higher “hp” one? So a higher output b58 in the m50? Step up in luxury and this is a very compelling car.

Correct, that is what I meant. The engines are supposed to be the same as they have now but I'm guessing they will increase the HP a bit since it is a new generation.

Will this potential alter your plans of getting the next gen x5 or you need the space?

No it won't. While I usually don't need the space I enjoy having it especially for road trips. That said, I will give it a test drive and maybe it will surprise me. Unlikely it will entice the wife though as a few times I had an X3 for a loaner and she thought it was too small.

I agree with your wife. you really feel the difference in shoulder room in the current x3 but hey maybe they will make it a little wider next gen. They better replace the seats. They are horrendous!!

If they do this the new x3 m50 would be best in class by far.. it will be a home run..

Better seats

Better materials

Slightly wider and little more rear legroom

> 400 hp

Dynamic handling package w/ Active sway bars like the m60 - maybe even rear steering.

G45 I see.
Might be a stupid question but will the "M50x" replace the M40i moniker?

Not stupid, yes it will. They are dropping the "i" from the model names. At intro in the US we will have the 30x and the M50x. Worldwide should be 20dx, 20x, 30ex, M50x.

I would hope we get more details within the next four months or so.

I agree, X5 really is a Goldilocks vehicle. Big enough for a family of 4, but not really any more. You either have to have a companion vehicle that's larger, or be a family of 3 that sometimes goes up to 4 IMO.

Macan, X3, etc I think are a fine size when more than 2 people is the exception to the rule. X3 is like, 6 inches too short inside to work. I wouldn't have been able to fit my kids rear facing behind me in it. The unfortunate part of that, is due to the seat design of the x5, my oldest is pretty cramped in terms of leg room in his rear facing seat, so he's probably going front facing sooner than my wife would prefer. Which means the X3MC probably could have worked out sooner. Such is life, my X5 is a blast, but I donthink sometimes the X3MC would be more of a blast with that screamer of a S58.

Is the X still going to mean AWD? Or would you have an Sdrive 30x if it's 2WD?

My understanding is that with the new nomenclature when there is just a number then it is not AWD, x would be xDrive, e would mean PHEV, d would be diesel and i would mean electric.

Automatic high beam operation seems greatly improved on the LCI. Oncoming vehicles are detected quicker and accurately. I know it certainly works much better than it did on my other BMW.

Digital Key+ is great! I never carry a key any more and use my phone. My backup is the card I have in my wallet.

Voice recognition is so much more responsive than it was on ID7. I wouldn't call it instant, but compared to ID7 it is. This is probably in part due to the faster hardware they are using now. Unfortunately the command structure is still limited and I don't think you can combine commands such as "turn off heated seat and heated steering wheel".

The mild hybrid system seems improved. I first had this on a 2021 M340i and it couldn't last with the engine off for more than 15 seconds before it had to turn the engine on again. I thought it was rather useless. On my X5 the vehicle can easily sit a few minutes without restarting the engine.

I'm glad to have cooled cup holders again! Something the 8 series should have had... Took a drive the other day and it kept my drink cool....

So kind of how it was done back in the day, but dropping the I for fuel injection?

I wish they'd bring more diesels back to the US. My ideal X7 would be a PHEV diesel, preferably a series hybrid with electric motors and the diesel is just a generator. Give me 50iles of PHEV range and I'm good, plus a 20-25 gallon diesel tank. Maybe they can get away from DEF too since it's no longer the motor, and instead a generator.

You will likely never again see diesel passenger vehicles in the US even in a hybrid form.

Sadly you are correct. VW's dieselgate ruined it for us.

It's a damn shame too. Between incompetence at the EPA, and a desire to paint diesels as dirty, they never really had their chance.

The real shame is they're way better for the environment than gas engines too.
