First RFT experience

Some steel in the road on I25 today and my wife almost missed all of it. One piece caught the sidewall, though. She got off the highway and limped it to the dealer who, for the bargain price of $491, is replacing the tire this afternoon. The RFT did its job, though, as it went to zero psi in a hurry.

This is exactly why I didn't want to ditch RFT in X5. If my wife is driving with kids in the back, the last thing I want is they stuck in somewhere due to flat time. Even with spare, I also will not want her to go mess with it

Yeah, I go back and forth. We are headed to Montana and Canada Saturday, and planning to take her X5. Or we could take my GX460, with a full size spare ready and waiting. A flat in the middle of WY or MT is bad news, either with a RFT or donut spare. RFT worked great for her today, though, and is also why we've kept them.

If we take the X5 I'll take a portable inflator, betting that a screw in the tread is much more likely than a sliced sidewall.

Wouldn't you need a patch kit too? If you inflate the tire with a screw in it, it's just gonna leak again.

I might take one, but you can drive along way with a slowly leaking tire, if the screw is left in it.

We got it back, and the price was actually $451 which is the same price a a tire shop would have charged, and the tire was in stock. All in all a pretty good experience.

I'm kind of sold on the RFT tires. All the other cars that were pulled over where all the crap in the road was - and there were several - likely had ruined wheels before they got to the side of the road.

Funny story: In the twenty years we've been married, I've now had to fetch my wife three times for automotive issues. Today with a cut tire, once before where I had to go change a tire in the parking lot when it had a nail in it, and once when the thermostat in her Infiniti stuck closed and the car had to come home on a flatbed. In each of those cases she was on her way to or from a hair appointment. What does that tell you? I know what it tells me...

I pack a full size spare wheel/tire in the trunk for really remote places. But then I’ve been places without cell signal, and like being self-sufficient if needed…..
