I'm thinking of kitting up -- I'd like to use the BimmerCode app to start with (Android), but I might upgrade to esys if I find a suitable laptop for it.

I'm thinking of buying a OTG Ethernet adapter and a ethernet ODB adapter. I don't mind having wires around, as it's not like it's going to stay in the car anyway. Would you think this is the way to go?

Android does not support the cable, only Apple stuff can use the cable, so if you want to invest in the cable to use via Esys later, you will need an apple device to use bimmercode with that cable. If you need to use Android you will need a BT dongle.

There are some benefits to using esys right away:
- no need to buy the android BT dongle
- not dependent on the developer release cycle
- many more features available for coding. Almost unlimited in fact
- you can flash your i-step if feeling adventurous
- VO coding

Disadvantages:
- you will need a Windows PC or macbook with bootcamp/vm such as fusion
- Slightly more expensive as launcher pro is the cheapest option at $50. Much more expensive if you need to buy virtual platform software and/or a physical laptop
- some additional risk dependent on capability

Ultimately I think you need to ask yourself if all the features you need are covered by bimmercode right now. If they are then that's the best option as its quick, safe and inexpensive.

If you want more though, I wouldn't count on those features being made available in bimmercode, and consider how much those additional features are worth to you.

I just get error message saying 'Session has been terminated' I can see my iphone connecting to device under blutooth connections.

Yes I get a detailed message saying that the connection has been terminated please put the car in diagnostic mode by pressing the start stop button three times

Did you ever get the M animation back? If not then - disclaimer first - do this at your own risk and I am not responsible for any thing that goes wrong or if you screw up. It worked like a charm for me and is pretty straight forward - now on to the solution: go to the head unit module in the BimmerCode app and then hit expert mode. Then go to startup_type and make sure the animation option is selected. Then hit code and you are all set. In my case it was selected to splash and I changed it to animation and works flawlessly. Even the goodbye animation is M themed now.

Depending on your istep level you might not have it neither. That's how I coded it.

This particular module is disabled in bimmercode for G05. Hopefully it will be enabled soon and I can change this to 5 blinks, unless there is a way that I don't know of to do it right now through the bimmercode app

This fixed mine - worked like a top (well almost - audio stopped working, but another reboot and it was all good). Some interesting stuff in there including one section that is all m settings including one setting that is m-vehicle on/off, settings for M-audo, M-tachometer etc, not sure if any of the setting do anything unless you set m-vehicle to active - not brave enough to try until I don't need to use the car for a few days in case it goes wrong.

I am glad it worked for you. Yes, there are so many other options in there which I felt like playing around with but just like you, I was scared as shit to brick my car and then have the dealership charge me an arm and a leg to bring it back to normal/usable. I am OK if somebody else wants to be the guinea pig and then I can try it out lol.

It is all coding in the Kombi, so you will need an e-sys setup or wait until bimmercode adds the kombi to the app.

Doesn't seem to work right in bimmercode, it codes it then tries to take you to the speedlock menu which doesnt work right.

Do this, once it reboots

hold the iDrive controller up, then press media then home then media. This should open the speedlock menu and you can set it to no speedlock.
