Looks like we are joining the party with our brand new 2024 50e.

Yellow check engine light came on Friday and today I had to have the thing towed to the BMW service department because it completely shut down, giving me the dreaded “Drivetrain Malfunction” error.

I am still waiting to hear about the diagnostic results but a potential month-long stay at the service department for a spanking new luxury car seems pretty extreme and I think I would try to seek some kind of compensation.

Interestingly mine was the third low-mileage/new BMW brought in today for similar issues, the others were an X7 (drivetrain malfunction) and iX (would not run).

Do you mind telling us your build week so we have more data? Thanks

Any vehicle can have an issue, as your MB has shown, and manufactures work through that to eliminate the problem part or design. In this case it seems like most of the issues are related to a bad batch pf parts but we don't have enough data to know for sure. Good luck with your decision.
Agree with the above. FWIW, I have ~1,500 miles on mine, 55% electric. Basically all but one long drive. I have a Grizzl E Level 2 at home. No charging issues or errors so far. I probably just jinxed it…

OMG!, we understand your pain. Please let us know what the diagnostic was and if you know your build date? Tx.

To answer the question about the build week, it was late week 18 or early week 19, and went to assembly on Friday May 5 or Saturday May 6.

Coincidentally, the BMW mechanic who is doing the diagnostics is a personal friend and I am sure he will shoot as straight as possible. He was working on it yesterday and has to call BMW today. He confirmed it has something to do with the high voltage battery.

I had already been following this thread and told him I would not be surprised if it was the refrigerant valve, and he said he should have more info soon.

Quick update on our end. Car has now been at the dealer for 2.5 weeks. They have us in a '24 x5 40i loaner instead of rental car (after some pushback from me) but have been unable to provide any updates whatsoever on when we'll get our car back.

Build week 21 for our car. May 20th production.

Thank you. It looks we all have the same or similar production week.

Same here, 3 weeks and 1 day. Still nothing, but what kills me is how BMW is responding to this. In my today's call to BMW NA, again my case manager is unavailable, spoke to another case manager and said that there's nothing I can do... just wait. Incredible.

I saw someone with week 15. Maybe it turned out to be something different.

Week 15 here also and no issue yet, and I'm watching this thread real close!

What do you think of the 40i loaner driving experience vs the 50e? I’m shopping all three engine options and have been leaning towards the 50e but this thread is giving me second thoughts. I typically keep cars for 8+ years so the 40i might be the most reliable in the long term.

I just bought my X5 50e by mid June 2023 and last Saturday July 1st the X5 showed check enging light after the vehicle was fully charged with a Level 2 charger. This was the first time the X5 was fully charged after we bought it, before this no issue.

We called local dealer and they did a remote scan and mentioned:

1. The scan showed some Battery system valve issue.
2. That we can keep using the vehicle, it is safe.
3. They will provide a loaner to us once the vehicle is being repaired.
4. They didnt provided a time estimate for the part arrival.

Not sure if is it safe to use the X5 like they are saying…

Im a bit concerned since this seems to be a common issue and no official recall has been issued, at least I havent been informed about it.

Any recommendations?

I got an X6 (2024) for a loaner, which by the way they want back (not happening) and it's very similar to the pre-LCI. The 50e has more torque and more horse power. If you care about that, it's worth it.

I really hope someone comes up with the idea to sue BMW. I would be joining them for sure.

It’s not just little more power…it’s A LOT more power. The 50e also seems to handle cruising at high speeds exceptionally well…it’s almost as if it prefers to move at 90-95 mph and it does it comfortably. I check in on this thread from time to time and I’m just gutted for my fellow 50e owners. I hope you get your cars back in short order as my experience thus far has been nothing short from amazing.

Has anyone confirmed of this was a specific tach issue w a certain part, wide spread issue w all same parts due to design flaw?

I’m on the fence about putting an order in now because of this.

Update: (7/6/23): The SA just texted me an ETA for the part... July 20th. Technically the car qualifies as a lemon and the worst part is that BMW is really not interested in talking to me.

Someone posted that there's a stop sale on the 50e.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I’ll test drive both soon but there seems to be a lot of love for the 50e, except the check engine light of course.

At dealer. Faulty EV valve to high voltage battery. Doing more test but part likely to take a month from Germany. No loaner available. Won’t commit on whether safe to drive. Hope they make a payment or two for me.

Make them give you a loaner or at least a rental.. otherwise they are not in any hurry to fix your car.

I’ll second that emotion on the 50e!

If nothing else, the Pre-Conditioning from the battery is something I’ll never be without on any future cars, I’m SPOILED!
