Exclamation Costco and Winter Tires - FYI/PSA

Hi All, I just found this out today as I'm at Costco trying to get winter tires put on the car. I have a '19 40i with the M Sport package and the staggered 22" 742M wheels.

I purchased an aftermarket set of 20x9 5x112 +35 wheels to put some 275/45R20 Blizzaks on for winter.

As it turns out, Costco refused to mount the wheels to the vehicle, because the sticker in the car says the wheels are supposed to be 22" and it's more than 3% different than stock. I mentioned that in the car in iDrive there are literally settings to change the tire size and select summer vs. winter tires, but they still would not do it.

It's a minor inconvenience for me, as I have all the necessary tools at home to change tires. However, this is a PSA for all who want to get cheaper tires at Costco. Be warned if you have an M Sport and you're getting smaller wheels/tires (because winter tires don't even exist for the stock size wheels, I don't think; I could be wrong there).

Walk the Costco service advisor/technician to the vehicle and show him/her the various tire options in iDrive This worked for me recently.

Yeah, I've heard that Costco checks that tire size must match door frame sticker. It is a bit of a silly policy, but at the same time, it does open the question why our stickers don't list all the factory sizes.

Did they let you bring your own wheels and TPMS modules?

My local Costco said they would only install on the Velox Wheels that Costco sells (or the ones already on the car) and I had to buy their TPMS modules.

Then they looked it up and said they didn't carry the TPMS modules for the X5.

These guys make it really hard to work with them. If they weren't the only place that seems to be able to get the Michelins around here, I probably would have gone elsewhere.

the door stickers in the UK show all sizes and pressures so should be good for places like Costco. I assume that they are put on in the factory in Spartanburg before the car is released, which begs the question why they don't do it for the US market.

Different regulations/requirements for different markets.

They are so annoying with the tires and wheels, I’ve just stopped going to them altogether. Not worth the hassle IMO. Pretty much the only thing they don’t do well.

The rules there are annoying.
I ordered Michelin Alpin 5 set there for a 20" winter, square set-up on my M60i.
Knowing their issues I brought just the set of 20" BMW take-off wheel/tires loose (off the car). They mounted/balanced no problem. I picked them up and took them home the same day.
