the fact that they skipped an F15 LCI is indicative that it was subpar

The F15/F16 had a subtle LCi but with no drastic changes.
The shorter lifecycle is due to the introduction of the new CLAR cluster Architecture which would mean the existing model would not be able to maintain from a manufacturing perspective as well as a competitive position especially when the new X3 Also move to cluster Architecture.

Both the X5 and BMW 3er Sedan will be replaced in the fourth quarter of 2018.

I really hope they do something with the styling that really brings this car out from the current vanilla style.

It's very sharp. Recent renders account for the camouflage panels on the flanks of the car so use them to add visual bulk to their "realistic" renderings.
The good new is X5 no longer has two jobs now that the X7 is coming.
So we are going to see a more enthused return to the original X5 concept both in style and dynamic ability.

There is also plans to introduce an X5"0" which is the trademark for the full EV models that will begin with the introduction of the X3"0" and 3"0".
But of course a new X5M will also continue as will an all new X6 Sport Activity Coupe.

So the kidney grilles which on most current models got connected to the head lamps will become de-connected again after only one generation? But wait, I thought that this design cue was a bold statement creating a strong unity of the front fascia visually enhancing the width and underlining the dynamic character of the vehicle?

i, e and now O. Ridiculous. BMW needs to get its nomenclature in order.

As for the lights disconnected from the kidneys, that will keep a $500 fender bender from becoming a $4,500 fender bender.

This doesn't look like an X5M. This looks like it could maybe be an X5 M50i. Exhaust are too far out and the front even know covered doesn't look aggressive enough to be an X5M same goes with the rear of the car. I could believe them doing an X5 M50i like they did the M550i, and M750i.

Update: April 3, 2018

The F95 X5 M prototype has finally reappeared! It now wears the same level of production parts as the latest G05 X5 prototypes.

The next X5 M will be powered by the F90 M5's S63 engine, but it may receive a very small power bump over the F90 M5's 600 HP. Production will begin in 2019 as a 2020 model year (in US).
