PLEASE look at your gas tank door!

I notice my gas door does not line up with the rear quarter panel. Looks perfect head on but at an angle, the lower corner toward the front and the entire top, above the body line, seem to stick out further than the rest of the car. I went to the dealer today to have them look at it. They agreed it didn’t look right so we looked at the five X5’s they had on the lot and they all looked similar, though more prominent on white. I examined every car (almost every series) on my walk back through the showroom and did not notice this issue. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? I called BMW customer relations, as suggested by the dealer, to file a complaint.

Anyone else notice this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I got the same problem. Went to the dealer today, and get them ordered the OEM part to replace it. Funny thing is the service guy told me the part will take two weeks to get here because its made in Germany, aren't all X5 parts made in the US?

X5 is built in the US, but parts are sourced from different areas of the globe (not 100% domestic).

I can’t believe they let it leave the factory like that. Where’s the German precision? Do you not get German precision if it’s made in the US? 😆

Mine is a week 48 mineral white. I'll attach a picture later. I didn't notice it for the first month and a half. Did you look at other X5's on the lot as well? I did and all of them looked defective, so I assumed it's a design flaw.

My week 48 arrived 12/26/18, had a radiator leak so I was told the part had to come from Germany. Perhaps parts are made in Germany and only assembly is here in North Carolina. I picked up on 1/5/19.

My gas door looks perfect from that view as well. Look closer from the rear, top down and let us know if you notice this same flaw. Thx.

Nada. Looking top down, my filler door lines are flush and symmetrical. I am crazy with fit and finish. Mine is perfect.

My E70, when I purchased it new, had misaligned doors on all 4 doors. Driver side rear passenger was the most noticeable. It didn't close flush with the body. The driver side mirror had a piece of the glass chipped off at the corner. The middle brake light was badly misaligned in the spoiler. The gas lid was aligned wonderfully with the body though. I know, i'm posting in G05 about E70. Never had any quality issues with my E90 and E92 though. I guess it happens. Dealer can fix it.

The man asked “anybody else notice this” . I didn’t, wanted to let him know. This part of the forum is about trying to be helpful to other BMW owners, Dave. If you don’t have anything helpful to say, try saying nothing at all instead of your usual juvenile snarkiness. That would work for us.

I never noticed or it's worked it's way out but mine sticks out some on top. I'm sure I'll be bringing it back to the dealer soon. I'll have them look at it.

Mines fine too and that was after it came out of a car wash completely hanging open yesterday.

*please no comments about the car wash, there's nothing that they can do it that me and my buffer can't get out monthly... and I'm not washing it in 23° weather or driving it dirty.

Mine is pretty minor compared to yours. Please lmk if they are able to resolve this for you. Since the X5's at my local dealer all had this same issue, they had no solution for me and told me it's part of the design.
