Close call with FOB and pool...

Had to jump in the pool to help my 4 year old out... Forgot FOB was in my pocket. I thought for sure it was done for. I immediately took the battery out to dry it out. To my surprise the FOB was bone dry on the inside. Looks like BMW may have added some water resistance to the FOB design, which I'm thankful for.

Garage List
I wouldn't go as far as calling it water proof unless you want to test your luck but the FOBs do seem to be resistant. I've washed my E60 FOB once. Everything turned out fine but I also didn't want to test fate. I also wouldn't want to try it with the display key.

Adding to this thread - went sailing today - involved wading waist deep in the water - and fully submerged the fob 5-6 different times. Didn't realize I had it in my pocket until I approached my car and it unlocked. Crap.

Washed it down with fresh water after - will see if there are any long term issues but the Fob seemed unfazed and worked as normal...

Take the battery cover off.. you’ll see on this fob and for many years before, there’s a degree of water resistance included.

The tried & true drying procedure for small electronics that get wet (including your phone etc)...is to put it into a sealed container (bag/bowl/jar/etc) of rice.

Don't turn the device on...and remove the battery if possible...let it sit in the rice for a couple of hours (the rice naturally absorbs any moisture).

That's an old school approach (albeit a good one!), where manufacturer design let the water in and you had to deal with it.

A lot of electronics now are designed with the expectation that they will be submerged temporarily and can handle "real-life" experiences and mistakes without the bag of rice trick... It sounds like (from many experiences posted here and elsewhere) that the BMW FOBs are designed to survive washing machines, dips in the pool and other submersion that doesn't exceed 6-10 feet.
