Would you buy a 50i now?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
As the title states, would you buy a 50i knowing it will be cancelled next year and replaced with with the M performance model?

I'm deciding between a 40i and 50i...

Thanks in advance!

Absolutely. The M50i is pretty much going to be exactly the same as a M-Sport but with a bit more HP. The 50i M-Sport is already reported doing a 4.3 0-60mph by a forum member and that was with a 3/4 full gas tank. I would bet it’s gonna do a real world 4 second 0-60mph with less weight in the fuel tank. It’s already so fast that in the world of performance SUV’s, you are gonna pay another $40k to shave 1/2 second off. As impressive the 0-60mph is, the monster torque from 60mph and up seems endless. I had a extensive test drive of my dealers 50i M-Sport and it’s a monster.
The X5 is brand new so it’s design will be relavent for a long time. Now is the time to buy imo. In a few years the X5M will be out and it will be the ultimate performance SUV but it’s all season versatility keeps it a niche vehicle for my area of the country. It’s also gonna be a $140k vehicle as that is the where the new price point is now.

I don't forsee a huge price increase over the 50i nor do I see the 50i going away in 2019. I think they will launch the M50i later than expected because of high demand for the current 50i among other things. I own an X3 M40i and while it's great the M Performance (different from full M) models have a pretty harsh ride and aren't the same luxuriously comfortable, well handling vehicle as a 50i + DHP, that's my expectation. Would I buy one over the X5M probably not. I'd take a regular 50i or the X5M.

I bought one. Don't regret it at all. If you always wait for the next best thing, you'll be waiting a long time.

The growl when it downshifts when you're cruising to a stop light is better than viagra. Sound porn!

Current F15 50i is amazing and I have a third row. Anyone have any insight as to when/if third row will be available with G05 50i?

Ordered a 50i Msport with DHP and waiting for it to be made. I would definitely order again over the 40i or wait on the M50i planned for MY2020. The 40i is good but can't be ordered with DHP and the price i'm sure will go up plus the wait doesn't justify the extra HP the new engine my have in the M50i.

My lease on my X6 ends in March, but will extend it a few months and wait to order the X5 M50i...I don't think there will be any significant price increase maybe $2-3000 to account for the standard aesthetics on M50i.

I'm waiting for the M50i. It'll have different body kit, wheels, engine, etc.

My biggest concern is the suspension set up. All K Performance vehicles to date ride harshly in all drive modes speaking form experience. If the same remains true for the M50i you'd be better off just going X5M because at least that would make up for the harshness with more power and fun

DHP
The DHP uses the same M adaptive suspension but adds electronic anti roll bars and IAS (4 wheel steering). You can look at the tech docs to see what I mean. My M40i rides hard, even on non-RFTs to cause speaker rattle. I had to replace half the speakers under warranty so far because of the ride. The dampers do adjust softer/harder both modes are still hard. Someone here had a great explanation for it. The X3 M40i I. e. and M Performance vehicles had a harder suspension static than the X5 does in sport. M Performance models like the new M340i are no different if you read the test drive reviews. I don't think the X5 would be on my list if the suspension was equally stiff.

I looked at the last m50 and passed on it after a test drive. i didnt like the sound and it didnt seem to perform any different for me. I think it likely would have performed better but i dont drive that way so the performance ,if any, was transparent . thats when i decided to wait a few years for the next gen which i expect to land at the dealer in a couple of weeks.

there is no M50i yet only a M50d which we don't get here. Did you mean a regular 50i? There wasn't and old M50i/d before either

I went for the M50d and it wasn't too harsh at all, although I'm comparing it to my current F80 M3 Comp, current FJ Cruiser with modded tuff dog suspension, previous Golf R and the harshest of all rides my old Civic Type R. We took it for a 2 day test drive and it was smooth in comfort and firm yet still comfortable in sport. Very impressed with the handling and performance, the torque is amazing on the highway! 😵
