To piggyback on this, after the update earlier this week my range estimate drop to 30 miles but after a couple of drives it recalculated to 48 miles...

Well thankfully as other people have said the vehicle did just reset to the EPA setting and after some city driving today it increased back up to 41 miles. I'm still getting about 2.3Miles per KWh but I took the i8 out for a 23 mile ride today and was getting 4.6 miles per KWH. That car is so much more efficient and I'm guessing with the motors driving the front wheels directly instead of the X5 electric motor going through the gearbox it loses some efficiency. Anyone find that they get better efficiency in manual mode as they can select a higher gear? I'm going to try that tomorrow to see if it makes a difference.

If you switch to manual you turn on the ICE.

With the software update the total electric miles driven is set to 0 and kWh/100 km is reset to factory default.

Once you start driving it will be more accurate again like you saw.

It is just the board computer being reset.

The X5 weighs a LOT more than the i8. Has wider tires to help hold it all up. Has higher drag coefficient, so it will never be as efficient at the i8.

What is the adaptive mode referring to? I thought it was to change for the style of driving, that is changing from comfort to ECO to sports depending on the road conditions. Is that correct?

It changes gear, steering, damper, gas respons to the actual driving style and also road conditions and programmed trip. So it is not really switching between the drive modes. And it also adapts electric settings to the programmed trip for the 45e.

One thing that I noticed: I drive my car for a while in hybrid, starting from 100% battery then park the car when it's about 75% for 1-2h. When I come back the battery indicator is close to 50%.

Anyone seen this?

This isn't about the range but rather the fact that when I turn on the car after it being parked for a while outside the battery indicator shows a significantly less percentage that it did when I stopped the car.

Temperature has been around 45 to 55F (7 to 13C).

I am amazed at those of you with over 40 miles moodyhank82 or @FLYIN' even after the software update.

I had my 45e for a little more than couple of weeks and always shown under 30 miles of electric range. I use the a/c, seat massage, seat warmer, etc. but still is 25% less battery than other forum members.

I really wish BMW would give you the mpg on ICE along with the miles driven on electric...maybe its just me!

I do not know anyone that drives their vehicle EXACTLY like the conditions in the EPA test procedure. As a result, few will get the same mileage, whether that's an ICE, a hybrid, or a pure electric vehicle.

One reason why the battery could show less after leaving it then returning is the temperature dropped, or you told it to precondition the cabin. When you use the vehicle, the battery warms, just like any battery when it is being used. Sit for awhile, and the battery will cool off some, and that could cause it to indicate less range. The indicated miles on mine does vary based just from temperature changes.

Driving an EV or hybrid presents new things to learn...it does not operate like vehicles you grew up with. It takes some learning.

It really depends on what kind of driving you do. When I drive mostly on the city with traffic, hills etc, I get 29 miles as the range for a full battery. Lately I’ve driven mostly on roads and freeway and I’ve been getting 40 miles as the estimate.

I would concur with others on your driving style and getting maximum range.
Keep the display on the dash that shows your instant range per KWh and you will see where you can improve. Treat the accelerator pedal as if you have an egg between it and your foot. Once you get up to speed then back off ever so slightly again and you will see you can keep the speed up and still drop the battery usage. On longer trips save electric driving only when you can be less than 75mph and ideally 30-50 mph. Anything over 80mph and you should only be in hybrid mode and at that you can see that at times you only get 10mpg while mashing the accelerator but 24mpg otherwise.

If you want to see your estimated electric miles change, turn off the AC. My estimated range will change by 4-5 miles based on the AC being off or on.

I got the software update and briefly had it showing 30 miles of range. But now after some driving, it is usually showing 35-40 miles of range again when 100% recharged. Whatever the software update did, I think others are correct with it just being a factory reset.

I found a stretch of perfectly flat and straight road, and I tested Full Electric in cruise control at different speeds with the heater on.

70 mph = 2.1 mile/kwh
65 mph = 2.3 mile/kwh
45 mph = 3.7 mile/kwh

Not very scientific given that those are short term measurements but it gives a good idea of how different efficiency can be at different speeds.

I really wanted to change the threshold of ICE to start while in Hybrid mode from 68mph to 50mph.

I purchased the X5 45e in late October. When I first got the car, it showed an electric motor range of 25 miles. I have been driving the car first on electric only both in town and highway driving. Some trips are 80 miles roundtrip, where I deplete the battery. After 600 miles, when I fully charge the battery it shows an electric motor range of 39 miles. I believe the e-range adjusts according to your driving habits. On my 80 miles round trips (about 70 are highway miles), I used cruise control at 70mph. The electric battery almost makes it to the half-way point. I then charge it (110v) for 4 hours. In total about 56 miles are electric (70%). Quite pleased with that.

Has anyone seem graphs of battery percentage charged over time for both 10A and 16A?

Interesting to see what the length time needed is to get to 70% battery charge (at which point speed of charging should decrease incrementally).

How fast the charging rate is not exactly simple or linear. It is based on the battery temperature, the current state of charge, and how fast it's actually being charged. It could get up into the 90+ percentage range before it slowed down. It can also be slowed down if when you plug in, the batteries are exceptionally cold soaked, or very hot. Keep in mind that the power drawn may be going to the cooling circuits rather than into the batteries, and there is some power lost in the AC-DC conversion...more from 120vac-DC than 240vac-DC.

1000 mile update, still about 92% electric driving with displayed range hovering around 40 miles. Used about 1/8th of the tank so far...

Mostly electric individual although if I am driving longer distance (20 miles or more) I use the navigation and select adaptive to optimize the EV use.

What are you guys seeing for electricity consumption? I'm at 2.1miles/kw, avg speed around 41mph.

Currently have 1/4 tank of gas left, 1250 miles since last refueling. I need directions to the gas station its been so long !!!

Loving this truck!
