Potential delays for 45e orders

Due to the recent BMW PHEV recall, BMW is no longer is taking new orders for 45e and the specs for the car are no longer available on BMWUSA or BMW CA site .

This is likely to impact delivery of active build orders until the recall issue is fixed .

Any thoughts ?

Well, I have a 45e that was literally built this week and still awaiting carrier assignment from the factory. Just yesterday my CA sent me an update saying mine as well as a couple other X5s are delayed and it will likely going to be on the same truck when they finally ship. We will see if this will be an extended delay due to the recall or the car will be delivered to me next week.

I also know that one forum member that I referred to my CA took delivery of his recently built custom order 45e yesterday so the recall did not impact his car for sure...

The recall has specific date range ( jan - sep 20 ) so recent build may not be impacted. But I am also hearing that they are going to stop all 45 e deliveries until they figure out a permanent solution for the battery issue . Not sure what is the battery issues , whether it is vendor or the design

From the recall on NHTSA website:
Chronology: On August 4, 2020, BMW became aware of a field incident involving a Model Year 2021 BMW X5 SAV in which the vehicle experienced a thermal event. An analysis was initiated. Between early August and mid-September, BMW became aware of three additional field incidents.

A review of supplier production and process change records indicated that for the incident vehicles, battery cell production at the supplier occurred during a specific and limited time period. Further reviews indicated that during this time period, a higher rate of impurities (debris) could have been allowed to enter one or more battery cells.

Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.

On September 23, 2020, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.

BMW Group has not received any reports, nor is BMW Group otherwise aware of any incidents or injuries.

So it appears to be limited to specific batteries. I haven't seen any credible posts of stop sales on the 45e. Mine is still in "scheduled for production", but I don't expect it to be impacted by this recall.

How long is you vehicle in the scheduled for production status ?

Historically around 2 weeks before it changes to 150- Production begins

It has been 16 days for me and still no progress . I have to assume that this is has to with the recall

I received my 45e yesterday as Moodyhank mentioned.

First off to Moody (and this forum), thank you for referring me to your contact. It saved me at least $5k.

I ordered the Phytonic blue with Shadowline and love the look. I'm also happy to report that the garage did not burn down last night.

I will update more about range when I get a proper charger/circuit installed in my garage. I was empty when I hooked up the slow charger last night at 6pm and it said it would be fully charged at 6:10pm....... the following day. I did have 17 miles of range this morning which is sufficient to get me to work and back so it's working temporarily.

By the way, I looked back when I talked to Moody and it was September 14 and I think I finally ordered the car on the 16th. Quick turnaround!

Again, this forum is such a breath of fresh air compared to anything else online

My order lasted a long time at "received order," like a month. I think it had to do with my particular allocation number. It wasn't expected for 6-8 weeks from the get-go. It's now been at "production begins" for 9 days. The Genius guy said it's scheduled to be finished next Tuesday, the 20th. Who knows what's happening now. My CA is checking into this, being that the specs are now gone from the website.

Have you tried calling BMW genius to get your build week? They can look it up even if you only have Production #.

I just finalized my order yesterday, so obviously I am crossing my fingers that it isn't delayed/recalled.

Not sure if this is a helpful data point, but I did do a test drive on Saturday. The dealer where I drove the car said that all of their X3 30e's and most of their X5 45e's were affected by the recall, but that the newest 45e that they had received was not affected. They told me I couldn't test an X3, but that I was able to test drive the 45e because it was a later build date and therefore was not affected.

May I ask where or from whom did you hear about stopping all 45e deliveries? I would understand not selling inventory units that are on the recall list but not selling any 45e and not taking orders for 45e would indicate a much larger problem than just one bad batch of batteries...

Edit: Just spoke to my CA now and he said that they are still taking new orders for the 45e

Just as another data point, I just spoke with a BMW genius in their "iPerformance" group. He told me that my car was scheduled for week 46 production and that it would not be delayed or affected by the recall. I ordered it yesterday.

Nice find, very helpful! I would like to believe that the 45e cars built after 9/23 should be fine hence MaybeX5 was able to take delivery yesterday and not told to avoid charging or using the sport mode as mentioned in the NHTSA filing...

Curious still why the specs are missing from the website now. Only the 45e's are missing.

Spencer518 , we are on the same boat. Got the production number on 9/26 and scheduled for production around 10/1.

Last week, Turtleboy told me to call BMW Genius. BMW Genius told me week 45 for the production (first week of November). I would recommend you to do the same.

Some people that ordered end of August or early September in the East Coast just got their cars now (i.e. brave-heart). For them, it was around six weeks. I think it will be six to eight weeks in our case.

Order on 8/31 in NY. Will take delivery tomorrow. The production date was 10/5, so the first a few weeks in Sep were just waiting for the allocation.

if you already have production numbers you will be good. Double check with your sales rep to confirm. I would hope any issues with your order your sales rep would reach out. Again though maybe a quick call wouldn't hurt

I'm sure they have a very complex methodology for the order in which they produce cars. Maybe they group them by color, so they don't have to change paint on the line. Or maybe they group them by model number or suspension choice. One 45e could take 4 weeks and another 6. I'm just guessing here

What is the number to call Genius to get the production week?
