Lane Change Assist

I think this has been covered elsewhere but I am unable to find it. Has anyone gotten their X5 to change lanes for them. I’ve tried holding the signal stalk in the direction I want to turn but no matter how long I wait or how big an opening, it never changes lanes. I’ve got the traffic assist professional package and all the other driving aids but it seems not to be working.

Yes, I use it all the time. Are you pushing it past the point of resistance so that the stalk stays down or up? Or are you holding it just before the point of resistance? It only works in the latter case.

Also, you have to have cruise control engaged with drive assist active. You also have to be going above a certain speed.

Cruise is on at various speeds 30-60 mph. I push it to the point of resistance and hold, nothing. The dash shows the green bars on the front and back, and left and right of the vehicle while I’m doing it.

Yeah, that is bizarre. That should work provided drive assist is active and has an eye on the lane markers.

I think you get a graphic pop up if it’s going to change for you? Something with a car and arrow showing the direction the assist will be going. Saw it in a video, just never been able to replicate.

It seems to work only when your cruise control is set to steering & lane assist. Which is when you have to hold your hand on the wheel, you have the active cruise control set, and the green lane markers lit up. It also works above a certain speed. I think 40mph is the minimum. It does NOT work when cruise control mode is active traffic assist. If you turn on the blinker, it will just cancel the active traffic assist and revert to steering & lane assist.

Once these are satisfied, you just push it up to the point of resistance and HOLD it. After 2-3 seconds (it checks if everything is clear) it will show the lane as gray, and a green arrow over it, then the car will start moving. You are still advised to hold the steering wheel while this is happening. Once the car starts moving you can let go of the stock.

Hmm. I have the lane keep assist disabled. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? It’s kind of the opposite of changing lanes but maybe?

You should have both the lane markers and the steering wheel icon both showing as green. I don't think it matters if you've turned off lane keep assist.

Those are all showing during my many attempts. I guess I’ll just have to bring it up with the dealer next time I’m there. It sounds like I’m doing it correctly.

Hitchhiker has it nailed. Where is the convenience in all that procedure I have wondered. I've seen it better implemented in other marques.

It's pretty seamless in my experience.

Check your setting. The auto change lane feature can be turned on and off separately from everything else.

It was turned on already. I did finally get it to work today. There was hardly any traffic around when it decided to work. You could have fit three 18 wheelers with 53’ trailers in the space I had. That seems to be the issue; it ignores perfectly acceptable opportunities to change lanes. So it seems this truck drives like an old women!

I’m seeing a pattern here. Doesn’t see openings for lane changes and doesn’t see parking spots.

My other thought is that I tend to unconsciously let go of the wheel when I’m trying to get it to do the lane change. Maybe I would have more success if I consciously made an effort to hold onto the wheel during the process?

I usually let go also to hold the turn signal on and I have never had it not make the lane change. It will just flash the yellow "put your hands on the wheel" warning.

I can't do it either. Does it work in Australia, or USA only?

Try turning into a lane that is free of traffic for hundreds of feet to get a feel for it. That’s the only time I’ve gotten it to work.

I really like how smooth the lane change works. I use it on long trips. It really makes you feel it’s autonomous driving to the next level. When passing a slower vehicle with acc on, a slight hold on the turn signal stalk and the system evaluates the entire area and proceeds to move over and around the car in front of you. It’s kinda spooky the first few times you use it as you feel the X5 might keep moving left off the road but it never does. The entire motion is smooth and seamless. Your passengers will never know you are not driving.
This has a “Geewhiz” factor of about 11 on the scale of 10. It will either blow the minds or terrify your passengers when you first demonstrate it.
