$1300 service for F/R differentials and transfer case at 4 years?
I brought my 2019 X5 with 33,000 miles in for service. The BMW app says I need an oil and brake fluid change.
My dealer, Bellevue (WA) BMW (AutoNation) told me that I should replace my front and rear differentials and transfer case at 4 years because it prevents much more expensive repairs later. Screenshot of the >$1200 quote for these 3 items. Seems odd for an SUV with only 33k miles on it. Thoughts?

I changed mine at an independent at 50k miles and only costs less than 100 bucks in labour and oil costs around 20 bucks for front differential 20 bucks for rear diff and 20 bucks for transfer case. I used revenol oil.

Wow maybe now that I’m out of warranty I should be looking for a trusted independent service shop. I’ll post a separate thread for recommendations.
Is the transfer case “service” also just an oil change? |

Yes oil change, however you will need ISTA to run oil change function for transfer case so that you can get most of the oil out, there is no drain plug so needs to be suctioned out.

In fact revenol DTF-1 for transfer case is better than BMW OEM DTF-1
You can read more about it here https://www.ravenol.de/en/oiltests/r...0BMW%20DTF%2D1. |

Eastside Bavarian is great. BMW tried to charge me $450 on M50I air filters today….

That’s odd - that isn’t even the right spec gear oil for the differentials. The front calls for a different oil than the rear as well.
And you definitely don’t need 64oz - BMW sells the fluid for the front in 0.5L bottles, which is the spec for it. The transfer case takes 0.7L and the rear I believe is around 0.6-0.7L as well. |

Auto-nation dealers sadly ruin the dealership experience. Def go to an Indyshop and these fluids are supposed to be lifetime which means replace more around 50k miles.
