doesn’t RWD stand for rear-wheel drive? what do you mean by “opening” it?

hmmm I don’t know exactly the F95/F95 powertrain but as far as I know, it’s not 4WD. it’s AWD (all wheel drive), and BMW’s AWD system (xDrive) has a front: rear bias of 60:40 that dynamically adjusts axle power according to conditions.

EDIT: I just did a cursory search, and it appears what you want to do can only be done by purchasing third-party software which will change the coding on the car to allow you to switch to RWD. you can’t switch from AWD to RWD via factory settings menu

on the f90 m5 you can do this through MDM settings. you can cycle through 4WD Sport and RWD. Not sure if the same applies to the x5.

Not possible on the X5M or X3M from the factory. I know its possible for the X3M but have no idea what that entails.

Sure, but my guess is that you can't mechanically disconnect the front end. Therefore, all you are doing is introducing a bunch of friction in the system for no real gain except fun.

But to each, their own.

BMW calls it 4WD on the menus, for whatever reason. I guess to highlight that not all xdrive systems are the same, with the X5 having all the features (torque vectoring, etc). It can also send 100% of the power to the front or back wheels, and afaik 100% to any individual rear wheel. Not sure about the front wheels.

Anyways, OP: I saw the same video you're referencing. They probably used a transmission flash tune to enable RWD mode, like on the M5s.

It is for sure possible, I have been in one. Any bmw xdrive can be turned into rwd, either in manual or by code. I have had an e61 xdrive with x delete, turn it into rwd car.
