i've leased my cars for ... over a decade. this time around i've decided to buy a '21 or '22 and keep it for a bit, but realized that i don't know how the warranty stuff works on a subsequent ownership.

does the primary warranty need anything to transfer? or is just 4 years / 50K regardless of who's name is on the title? are there service expectations that if unmet void the factory warranty? like the PO skipping the break-in service for example. just looking for gotchas.

also, if i were to get an older car (a '20 or '21) that was near the end of the warranty, can i purchase an extended factory warranty? what about if the car isn't sold by a BMW dealer?

I will chime in using my scenario--while other chime in also. I got mine (2023) out of a Land Rover dealer in CT. Whatever warranty was left, transferred to me. I also bought Fidelity Extended Warranty. While this is the same extended warranty many BMW dealers were offering me, I did not buy it thru a BMW dealder but thru a Volvo Dealer. I can PM you their link, but I think you should be able buy extended warranty on 2020/21. The only thing I think it does not transfer to you is the BMW Maintenance Program. But that depends on the year. According to BMW USA website it states: BMW Ultimate Care consists of scheduled maintenance for the 3-year/36,000 mile (transferable for MY2022 and newer), whichever comes first.

Is transferrable for 2022 and newer, not for earlier models, BUT....a dealer will be able to answer that question with precision. Like mine being a 2023, as the 2d owner, it transferred to me when I registered having the vehicle under the BMW USA website.
