G05 X5 and Porsche spec tires

G05 OEM Pirelli P Zero 20” star marked RFTs are finally worn out. Thank god.
I have 20” staggered (740M wheels) fitment on my 2021 X5. And that i don’t want to lose. Because stance is great with those.

Fronts: 275/45R20
Rears: 305/40R20

But the tires. What summer/all season tires next??

I want maximum comfort, silent noise, etc, ..this is not a track car. Basically the most comfortable setup.

I dont want ultra high performance tires which last only one season.

Tirerack.com gave me a few options..

does anyone have experience with these tires..??

Our old SUV came with the verdes. I didn't like it at all. Very noisy, and bad road feedback. I had then removed well before they were worn out and had some DWS06 put on which is probably one of the best all-season tires ever made.

Rear tire 305/40 size is a problem. There are only a few models you can get. DWS06 is not available on that size.

Oh believe me, I share the pain. My rear stock size is 315/30/22 and there is literally 3 tires to choose from and none last more than 8k miles and near $700 each. I'd give anything if conti would make a DWS06 in my size!

I have the 22's as well in that size and i've thus far managed 17K on them with about 5-8K left according to my SA when i took the car in this weekend for an oil change.

Discount tire/America's Tire has the OEM continental's for $424 for the rear (per tire). Full set with install (not including the tire insurance)…a smidge under $1700.

Avoid those Pirellis at all cost. They were not great on our Mercedes GLE. Noisy and vibration due to out of round tires from fractory. Stick with Michelins.

We have these Michelins A/S 3 N-spec on the Audi A8l and they are very smooth, quiet and comfortable and lasted 3 seasons from spring to fall with 20k miles of driving a year. I use separate winter wheels and tires for winter time.

Good luck with your choice. Getting RFTs off my G05 is a goal of mine but my OEM tires just won't wear out and I'm too cheap to replace early.

I've got the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ Ultra High Performance tires on my 3 series and I love them. However, it's not a direct comparison to SUV tires.

Whatever you choose, please report back and let us know how the go flats feel vs your RFTs.

Meanwhile, I will continue to try to wear out my OEM Bridgestone 20" RFTs. 35k miles and still lots of tread left.

unfortunately none of that applies to my car (I have an X5M) The rear tires will wear out long before 15k on the X5M! See thread on owners tire wear experiences -> https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1896315

The only matching sets for my car (315/30/22 rear / 295/3521 front) are 3 choices; Michelin PS4s, Pirelli PZero, and a Pirelli winter tire. The Michelins that came on my car are about $700 each for the rear on tire rack.

Thanks. This is good to know.

I'm just wondering how much those Porsche spec tires differ from a normal Pilot Sport A/S 3 model tire..

It can take many miles and lots of iterations to customize a tire to a vehicle. Different suspensions, rubber isolators, shocks, springs, and suspension geometries all play into how a tire will react with a vehicle. SO, something designed to optimize use on say a Porsche, is unlikely to be optimized for a BMW. That doesn't mean it won't fit and work, it's just that it's not optimized for that vehicle's suspension and chassis.

Unless you are going to track your car or drive it hard, I wouldn't think using non-optimised tyres would make a difference.

An interesting thing happened today. I went to driving a friend X5 45e because he had replaced it with new summer tires. Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUVs.
Size is 275/45R20 - 305/40R20.

surprisingly, those new Michelin tires are louder than my star marked Pirellis. And there is no big difference in comfort either. Michelin treadwear is also only 220 so they can wear out pretty quickly. I wouldn't have thought that.

They have a more symmetrical tread pattern which last longer than the standard AS3 in addition to being more quieter and smoother. They are V rated tires so less stiff then the regular AS3 Y spec but still great handling.

I replaced my RFT with Pirelli AS Scorpions and they were great. Even tho i did limited driving. No balance issues, MUCH quieter, better ride quality. Mine were correct size, but "Volvo" and "Porsche" spec.

My 22' Michelins I just put on my new stock 22's are giving me a heck of a balance issue. Even with true road force balance....i'm still getting mild vibrations 65-75 MPH.

Ah that makes sense. Yeah, the Michelin's with their softer compound coupled with the vehicle's heft leads to fast wear...and that French rubber doesn't come cheap either

I think you're missing the fact that the tires are optimized for not only handling, but NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), and any other characteristics BMW feels are desirable. Get a resonance at a certain speed or some other issue, and not using a star-marked tire, and it could just be that it wasn't tuned to the BMW's suspension and bushings and shocks. The variations can be subtle, and not everyone will experience it or find it objectionable, but they are real.

I know Michelin is a French based company but the Michelins on my X5MC were made in the USA.
Which is fine with me.

I have the Pirelli Scorpions on my '20 Cayenne, about 13,000 miles on them with zero issues. I have the acoustic glass so I don't notice road noise from them. Also, I have the E Hybrid, which weighs 200lbs more than the Cayenne Turbo, and no increase in wear evident in almost 2 years.

Did the staggered tire setup come from the factory? Any risks or issues with going to a larger rear tire on the 740M 20in wheels?

Yes. Staggered OEM tire setup came from factory. And this is EURO spec.

We had scorpions on 2 of our vehicles and they were terrible in water. They hydroplaned easily, were uninspiring; however, I did get about 30k miles out of them and they were significantly cheaper than the tires on my last 2 vehicles.

I had a really good experience with Goodyear eagle sport all-season tires on my Q7 (2 sets). They had pretty good dry grip, worked very well for me in the rain and good in light snow. Not sure if they have them for your setup, but worth a look .

Wow, that seems strange to me at least to have a staggered 20" setup. Since you mentioned you weren't looking for max performance , I would honestly try to switch wheels to a square 20" setup (get the style 738 20" or style 740M 20" wheels). Then you can rotate your tires to get better wear and have many more tire options. For best wear and nice manners, I would be looking at non run flat tires for the improved ride quality (carry a spare and/or patch kit) in one of three following categories: "Grand Touring All-Season", "Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season", or "Highway All-Season".

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra, Continental CrossContact LX25, or Firestone Destination LE3 would seem to match your requirements well. If you needed good snow performance and would except slightly worse road manners the Michelin Cross Climate2 is excellent all around tire and the one I would personally go with, but I also drive in some snow in trips in Colorado or Utah.
