0-60 times (Dragy)

Best I've gotten was 4.57 with full tank of gas and some stuff in the trunk. Is that what we should be expecting?
No launch control, traction off in sports plus with shifter in sport.
Only mod I have is resonator delete but can't imagine that slowing down the car.

Thoughts ?

Yeah, that is way off Car and Drivers 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. I don't know that much about the Draggy and its accuracy. Some guys seem to swear by them. I'm guessing there may be a glitch in there some where.

Remember that Car and Driver uses the 1 foot roll out time and also corrects to sea level. Your DA is only 159ft so there wont be much a correction factor. Looking at the G meter, you had a few tenths of a second delay before it really took off. Most likely this was turbo lag. There was also a sharp drop off after it peaked and interesting wave for the rest of your run, possible being limited by the DME, BMW sets the torque limit lower on the M50i then the M. Can't have you getting too close to the M ya know....You would need a data logger like the JB4 to confirm if this is happening by boost is being pulled.

You can try power braking to eliminate the lag at takeoff since launch control is a mixed bag when it comes to BMW's. If you resolve the delay in the launch, you should be right around 4 seconds 1foot 0-60 time. You might be able to find the missing few tenths by manually shifting at different RPM points.

BMWs' website shows 4.1 seconds for the M50i and they are always very conservative with these metrics, usually by 3 or 4 tenths.

Manual shifting was even slower, this was the best time i was able to get, with 1 ft roll I guess it's not that bad. That's in sports plus and in sport transmission, traction off

Warmer temperatures and lower ambient air pressure will weaken performance as well.

This was a dragy run I did awhile back. Full tank, launch control but didn't switch it to sport shifting. A bit of a decline on my run - not sure how much of an affect that has.

So did decide to do a JB4? Are you going to use the EWG? If it works well, I will be right behind you.

Yes went with JB4 and FI 200 cel downpipes

Not sure what you mean about using the EWG. Isn't that N55 specific ?

I can say with launch control it will be faster. I know when I don't use it I get a slower time.

I'm still waiting on my M50i, hopping to have it next week.
I've been researching and reading everything I can find about the piggybacks and decided to go with the Jb4 a while back but can't seem to find any detailed video or pictorial on the installation of the Jb4 on these '20/'21 M50is. There is mention of a more involved, installation that connects to the wastegate area on the TTV8 model X5s from a few years back, not sure if any of that info pertains to our X5s.
Hopefully there is someone out there or some literature on the various levels of install.
I can't really imagine it being all that difficult as these are just simple elecrical connections to sensors/controllers.
It would be quite helpful to find some info on firewall access for the CANbus connection.
Have you received your Jb4? If so, how are the install directions?

Yes i got the JB4 few days ago, just waiting to get it installed

Check out these instructions, step by step for the M50i (based on the engine bay and the gold kidney grills)

https://www.n54tech.com/instructions/JB4_G_N63R.pdf

In the pictures it says not to connect to EWG
I can verify with the installer once it's done

From what I understand, you won't need to connect EWG unless you are running map 7,
I'm planning to use map 1 and 2
Map 7 would be full bolt on with E85 mix

Appreciate all the info Tim. Looks like Maps 1 and 2 are what I am looking for here(5 or 6 LBS of additional boost). This should be a very nice bump in power for sure but I've heard each pound is good for about 15 HP.
Installation appears to be very straight forward. I am really excited about getting my M50i delivered in the near future, getting it broken in and proceeding on with the Jb4 but not sure yet about the down pipes, don't know much about them.
I'll be very interested to hear about your progress with modding and feedback.
Hope it all goes smoothly for you. Enjoy!

EWG is electronic waste gate control. If you want to run the tune and get the real gains then you need EWG control. Without, it is basically a CAN JB+. EWG is what all of us will want if we go JB4 because you can run higher boost without a CEL. Terry has told me it is still in BETA for the N63R as of now.

So... on a lower note, I went on the android market and looked at this "dragy" app.... but the reviews are "ehh" at best.

So far, does the app seem to work well? I'd be very interested in getting some accurate times.

App seems to work well and pretty accurate while driving, Matt Watson from car wow and autotopnl on YouTube swear by it so I'm sure there's something to it.

So without the EWG connections which appear to be in the works, what kind of HP and TQ increases are we looking at with a Jb4 on map 1 or 2?

I would think around 90 on stage 3 if it's based off 15hp per 1 pound boost

No difference on those maps. I donít think you need EWG control to run the JB+ maps.

I am sure with downpipes, you will see 100+ hp increases. It depends on how much boost you run, octane, and how happy your timing curve remains.

Remember, horsepower gain per lb of boost is non-linear. IATs rise fast as we increase boost reducing the gains you would see. Unless you use something like water/meth to drop those IAT, then your gains will notably fall off at higher boost. I havenít seen logs for our truck yet, so i canít say where the IAT start to limit gains.
