F10 to G05
Greetings all,
Just want to hear your opinion. I am considering a used 2020-2021 G05 upgrating from a F10. My main questions are as follow: 1. Is the G05 bigger than the F10 interior wise? 2. Is the B58 realiable in comparison to the N55? I currently have 105K miles on my 2015 F10 with just maintance care and no major repairs other than a valve cover gasket. Really considering the G05 if it can offer bigger interior space as i have a 2 yr old already kicking the back seat of the passenger seat. Smh |

My kiddo is 2.5 and kicks the back of my seat in my M50i. I'm also 6'2 so I sit fairly far back. It's not a large SUV, it's going to have space issues. X7 might be a bit better? Maybe GLS? We have an Expedition for our family vehicle so it wasn't a HUGE concern, but X5 is definitely a bit on the small side.

I have an M550 and an X7. I’m in this forum because I’m considering an X6.
But I just want to say that a kid can kick the seat in any car. You’re 6’2” so your seat will likely be pushed back in any car. In our X7, it’s definitely way less of an issue. So don’t get me wrong, if you go big then it helps. But my wife is 5 ft and I’m 5’6”. So our seats aren’t that far back. In the 5 series, I put the 7 year old behind the passenger and have a seat setting on the front passenger side where the seat is pushed up to give him room. I rarely have the whole family in it but I can. The X5 might have a little more space in the back seat but I think the kids in the booster or car seat will still likely be able to kick the seat if they want to. But there’s one way to find out… test drive with the car seat and kid in the car!

Also, the B58 is awesome. Very reliable. Incredibly smooth. It was awesome in my 2018 540 and it’s awesome in our X7. It’s a very satisfying and versatile engine.

The B58 is realiable with the LCI version being the 3rd generation.

For what it’s worth, my 5yr old was easily able to kick the back seats in my 7-series G11 (the European, normal wheelbase version). That’s why I got the backrest cover from the BMW accessory catalogue, and just went along with the kicking…
In the X5 the kids will be comfortable nonetheless. The fact they can kick the backrest of the front seats does not mean they will suffer from limited legroom

FWIW, my 2.5 year old can't kick the back of the seat in our Expedition. My wife is only 5'5 and when she drives, he can barely even see the seat back (joke obviously but its a big car).
I think the bigger issue is that the X5 seats don't slide back at all. They just are where they are. With most of the 3 rows, you can push the 2nd row back further to eat into 3rd row space. A lot of 2 rows do as well, just eating into cargo space. But yeah, the space requirements are going to heavily depend on your height and size. I don't think his concern is legroom for the kids, it's spending $50k and still having a toddler kicking him in the back and annoying him, lol. |

2. The B58 is as reliable as the N55 (I have a 180K mile N55 in my F30), but there are things to look for. The 2019, 2020 may have some issues with the oil pump (symptoms start with the oil level failing to read past 22%, mine was replaced at 37K miles under warranty). Some cars have had the pump fail and trash the engine (happened to a 2019 X5 with 75K, but BMW did a Good Samaritan engine swap). My G05 only has 41K and aside from the oil pump and the steering column, its been pretty trouble free. |

My biggest issue with the G05 X5 rear seats is they don’t recline at all??? That is the most bizarre omission, considering the X3 has reclining second row seats and the X7 has limo like fully electric captain's chairs. How did the X5 get basic bench seats?

Thats why the Q7 is second on my list. Maybe they’ll reconsider redesigning an X5 with reclining rear seat on future builds. All though i dont have the budget for an X7, Q7 definitely will be next on my list.

This is such a first world problem it is not even funny. The rear seats are extremely comfortable they way they are. A one inch recline would NOT make them any better.

It’s all relative. Any problem on this forum is a first world problem just by nature of being BMW.

Most mid tier SUV’s have partially reclining rear seats so BMW not doing this only with the X5 is idiotic. The oem “cuddle pillows” also help the X5 rear seats as well as the tray tables add some versatility. Last edited by MystroX5; 04-05-2024 at 09:11 PM.. |

Btw, calling something a "first world problem" doesn't make you seem worldly or empathetic or anything. Just makes you sound like a twerp. |

I've been saying for awhile that they've very subtly downsized and de-contented the X5 a bit over the past two gens to make way for the X7. It's little things like this that reinforce that. G05 2nd row is definitely more cramped than what I remember from our E70.

I came from 2 F10 535's in a row I drove from late 2012 to early 2023 and the G05 X5 has quite a bit more headroom/shoulder room as noted by the specs but in person you notice it a lot......and it is a bit wider. The rear seats are not Chevy Tahoe sized couches or anything, but they should suffice. The steering feel is actually much better on the X5
I had zero engine issues with either F10 only maintenance and rear diff bushings wearing out every 36k miles.
