Is anyone really surprised though that a PRESS CAR has perfect rear seats?

If anything, the above quoted video just shows that BMW knows there is a quality control issue. My guess is that it's simply not enough of a problem to issue recalls, or make major changes to an already overwhelmed production line. Especially now that they're playing catch up.

For what it's worth, I will hope for the best when taking delivery of my full merino interior in September. If they're a big eyesore, rest assured I'll have them fix the car. I don't know if VIP build cars (ordered the car through BMW VIP program here in Germany) undergo a different quality control, but it's doubtful.

Last time I posted in this thread...... I was still waiting on my car to arrive.

It arrived in Feb 2020.. and the wrinkles are VERY minimal. I was not disappointed at all..... and thankful it didn't show up with crazy sloppy wrinkles.

I've seen some photos of rear seat wrinkles that are an absolute atrocity.

So... I'll stick with my original hypothesis: If they have lots of wrinkles.... it is NOT "intentional".... it's sloppy workmanship.

Picture taken right now...... June 2020.

Absolutely correct in my opinion. The "wrinkles" are intentional but there have been a number of very poor ones that have gotten past QC and should have never been shipped. Thankfully those are very rare and the overwhelming majority are similar to yours.

You need to reject the car as it hasn't got the "intentional" wrinkles, in fact everyone should hand their cars back as they haven't got the "intentional" wrinkles on the front seats. I can't believe some of you are trying to defend the undefendable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :

Okay, now we are posting nonsense so we can make it to 1,000 posts.

The lock has been taken off wrinklegate and here we go again.

My two cents on the actual topic at hand: The wrinkles in our G05 are minimal and really not noticeable at all. The back seats are pretty comfortable and probably because of the give the seats have as opposed to sitting on a bongo drum (insert Matthew McConaughey image here).

I've seen photos of G05 back seats that have awful wrinkles. I'd hate to have one of those cars.

I'm siding with post #938.
Absolutely the most thoughtful and obvious situational assessment.
That poster must be a genius.
There....38 more to go.

What hasn’t been mentioned is that the leather in the back of the X5M is different to the regular X5. It’s perforated, which lends it a very different structure/texture. I suspect, intentional or not, it would be much more difficult to get wrinkles in the stiffer perforated leather.

Come on, no introducing logic to this discussion. That will just ruin things for people.

Merino leather is the same, whether solid or perforated, in a X5 40i/50i/M50i or X5/6 M. The leather panel cuts are identical in the back - just perforated in the back, different decorative stitching and colors.

I attribute wrinkles in mine for not ordering a X7, LOL... Once they found out that this 2nd row bench was going in a X5, they slacked and add extra wrinkles

Have no complaints from friends and co-workers I've chauffeured around. Looking forward to playing the wrinkle rear roulette in 2.5yrs.

Not been my, albeit limited, experience in the F15/F16. Had both normal and perforated (ventilated) seats. I found the non-perforated version to be noticeably more supple.

My entirely uneducated guess has been that, with many little punctures in it, the perforated version requires extra thickness or treatment to ensure it is sufficiently robust.

Well, I had resisted the temptation to re-awaken this thread when I got my X6 in March, as I was pleasantly surprised to find my back seats were equipped with the "no wrinkles" version...but, since it's back, I decided to post pics!

Hmm, doesn't look like very comfy seats without those wrinkles

The picture really brings them out nicely. In person you hardly notice them. It was about 90 degrees that day.

Mine are slightly wrinkled. I’ll check build date and post pictures later.

I didn’t read the entire thread, just glanced through it, but in my opinion, I don’t believe those wrinkles are intentional.

Leather is a “natural” product, at mercy to the natural variations inherent to such materials. They could have been installed all in the same manner—without wrinkles—but due to some variations in either the material or drying/curing process, the leather could have “settled” or relaxed differently shortly after installation. Or, it could simply be due to variations in installation methods (i.e., poor workmanship) by having inconsistent tensions applied when they pulled the leather hides over the cushions.

However, either case is correctable in my opinion. Installation methods could adjust for the natural variations in material and/or personnel could have been trained better. My 2 cents.

Reading the entire novel can be a cure for insomnia but I can tell you, the wrinkles are in fact intentional, I wrote BMW NA headquarters, my post is buried here somewhere as to what they said. The wrinkles mrracer just posted are certainly acceptable and look good. The issue is the extreme variability in that one car has none, one is like mrracer and some leave indentations in your back and look down right horrible.
