I ordered one. Looks like 6 clips across the top and the entire grill slides out to get to the front camera?? These must be made to come loose in a front end collision. How do the clips attach to the front camera?

Yes, there are 6 or so along the top. You don't have to undo all of them; 3 or 4 will allow you to pull the grille off. The camera is clipped in using 3 clips. Once you get the grille off, you can unclip the camera. I'd caution against pulling on the grille too forcefully; I'd imagine you could unplug the camera wire if you do.

I just installed this on my car. I am NOT mechanically inclined so I thought I should share my experience. I read the instructions here:

I used a butter knife to loosen the clips in the top. Was able to pretty easily remove the camera but the clips are pretty tight. It would have been a 5 minute total job but I struggled a little to get the camera back into its clips. I even reinstalled the camera into the old grill for a moment to make sure I was putting the camera in correctly. For the original grill it seemed very easy to get the camera fully into the location so that the clips hang on to the top (as they should). For the new one it seemed to be a tight fit and was a little more difficult to push the camera all the way down to where the clips grabbed on.

In the end it was all quite easy and perhaps if I had been a bit more forceful when reinstalling the camera it would have saved me some time.

BTW, I ordered on Friday (Saturday in Taiwan) and it was shipped Monday and arrived Tuesday. For about $200 it was really quite reasonable.

Have we figured out if these new ones from Taiwan are painted?

Just cheaper version of same IND thing?

Worried about rock chips and if I should continue to hold out for BMW version.

Mine doesn’t appear to be painted. Seems like black plastic all the way through. Time will tell but the quality is quite good for the price.

From the descriptions it looks like it’s injected molded black plastic with a gloss top finish. That’s why I ordered one as any chips or dings will still only show black.

I installed the eBay one yesterday evening. Everything looked great and the quality looked really good. The only thing that I was not able to figure out was what the strips that came with it are for and getting the camera to slide into the housing of this black grill was a PITA. I had to disconnect the camera from the wire and then literally maneuver it into the housing with a pry tool and then plug it back in and then install the grill. This grill is definitely lighter than the OEM BMW grill that comes on the car.

Hopefully it will last just as the after market grills on my previous BMW's have lasted for. Time will tell.

AndroidRobot and I were discussing this. There is no reason to think this one might not eventually be a oem part made for BMW. Certainly BMW would have this part farmed out to a Asian supplier. I am going to look mine over real well tomorrow.

I was telling a forum buddy I was going to sell my wrapped grill and get one but I need to be patient to see what the OEM brings as as well as an M version.

The X5M will have the double spoke black grill. The M50i may even have the exact grill we are buying from eBay. At this point my only goal was to have the grill match the rest of the shadow-line trim.

It should come with the black grille and tips from factory to match everything else.

Same as M50d.

BMW signature is Cerium Grey on Mxx models.
