Hi everyone, I just took delivery of my baby this week and the CarPlay won't work, it only connects to Bluetooth audio and phone, but not CP. I've sougth help from BMW NA genius with no success. My car is a 2024 BMW X5 US Specs in Korea. Any advice or recommendation to make it work?

Dumb question here...are there other US spec car you know in South Korea that play Apple CarPlay?

Have you rebooted the system? Press/hold the volume knob for 30 sec.

I had the same problem. Couldn’t find Apple Maps anywhere. Finally looked at my iPhone and turned on car play under general settings and voila …it worked.
Now my question is can I toggle between bmw’s nav and Apple maps? I like things about both of them

Yes but you must input your destination in both. BTW, I use Google maps

I prefer google maps but it doesn’t display in the HUD

there's a caveat here. if your phone is connected to the vehicle in any way (iDrive/bluetooth or Apple CarPlay), you won't be able to have active navigation in two separate navigation systems simultaneously (BMW Navi, Apple Maps, Google Maps). the vehicle will sense this and pop a message stating something along the lines that "navigation is already active in another system". if you continue to enter the destination address in the secondary navigation system, the vehicle will use that and override/cancel the previous system**

as already mentioned, using Google Maps on an iPhone connected via CarPlay won't show turning directions in the HUD, but its navigation map will show on the control display in the CarPlay UI. i, too, prefer Google Maps using an iPhone 14 Pro via CarPlay

**i will mention that once when i tested this early on in my ownership, i had active navigation via BMW Navi and entered the destination address in Apple Maps. Apple Maps actually accepted it but went into some type of "monitoring mode" where it would monitor along the route (speed traps, red light cameras, etc) but not actively navigate the route as that was being handled by the BMW Navi. i've not been able to replicate it ever since that one time...

i've read other posts that certain things don't quite work the same in Korea-based X5 and wonder if CarPlay is one of them, though i can't fathom why

i've had a 99.9% CarPlay connection success rate for over 3y.
1) ensure CarPlay is enabled under your vehicle's BMW ID in your iPhone General > CarPlay settings
2) ensure both wifi and bluetooth are on and enabled upon entry into your vehicle (both must be on to establish CarPlay connection)
3) re-attempt connection via iDrive prompts in the COM menu

The only time I have issues with CarPlay is when I'm still within reach of my home wifi and my phone is still holding on the the signal from the house instead of connecting to the car wifi connection. I either wait till I drive away and it will connect or go into the phone settings and select the car wifi network that I want to connect to.

I use BMW Nav and Waze at the same time almost every time I use Navigation. I have not tried any other combinations, but this combination seems to work for me.

And you have a route active in both? Waze can always be used with BMW Nav to give you traffic updates. It can't, at least in iD7, be used with an active route when BMW Nav has a route active.

Yes, I put a route in both. Don’t ask me why, just comparing both Nav systems and bored driving. (retired pilot) I haven’t done it lately since any updates, so maybe something has changed.

that shouldn’t be the case. as mentioned above, my CarPlay connection has been very good. my iPhone connects to CarPlay before I even pull out of the garage, and my home wifi network signal is strong inside the garage.

check your BMW wifi network ID that you have “Auto join” enabled

My CarPlay has been working fine for several months. All of a sudden, over the last week, it's not connecting automatically and I have to go in to the mobile devices menu to select my phone. I wonder if a recent iOS update borked something.

It's weird, because my BMW still recognizes that the phone is connected and will even use it for calls (presumably over Bluetooth), but CarPlay won't launch until I manually launch it.

I just updated to iOS 17.4.1 over the weekend, but I’ve had consistent CarPlay connections on many previous iOS versions and still continue to have…

I can confirm that it's possible to have two navigation systems functioning at the same time. It happened twice on a recent road trip when I inadvertently set a destination in Google Maps that was already running in the native nav. (I was searching for nearby restaurants and/or gas.)

It's confusing and I don't recommend it. The display kept shifting back and forth between them and in a couple of cases giving me different route directions.

I got in the vehicle again after the disconnect and the iDrive screen was black. When it rebooted, the clock and weather widgets were missing. A short time later, they were back. I went into Settings and noticed that the vehicle updated itself to 03/2024.25 (I was on 11/2023 last week). I deleted and re-added my phone and CarPlay seems normal again.
Are these iDrive updates supposed to happen on their own without notification?

I’ve never heard of that happening before. IDrive actively asks for confirmation to update where the owner has to click on a couple confirmatory messages

This is correct, iDrive will not update on its own and requires the user to confirm the install.

OP - Given your vehicle spend more time at the dealer than your garage they probably updated it the last time it was there.

I suppose that’s possible, but there’s no mention of a software update on my paperwork from the last visit. Also, my iDrive system rebooted on its own, and went through the initialization process where it asked me to be introduced to the virtual assistant again.
