service based on mileage or time

I have a 2022 X5. It was delivered last March and I’m being prompted for service. I’ve driven 5,000 miles.

Is it imperative I get service now based on the 12 months elapsed? Or should I wait until 10,000 miles?

You need to get it now since the system is telling you it is due. There is no 10k miles service interval, that is just the starting point. The mileage interval can be moved up or down depending on the usage but there is also a time limit of 12 months if the mileage interval isn't reached.

If you want to retain your warranty, service the vehicle when the computer prompts you!

In UK service interval is 2 years or 18000 miles whichever comes first.

Yes, for some reason oil lasts longer over there. Lol. Actually it is just a marketing/feel good thing here since it could go twice as long without an issue. Modern oils will last 20k+ miles under most circumstances from what I have seen.

Some of the oil life will depend on the amount of oil in the sump. A typical Corvette engine might use 4.5qts of oil, while the BMW engine uses seven liters, or nearly twice as much. This is easier to keep cool, and has more additives to help it working longer.

A couple of decades ago, I had a V6 Infinity...they called for oil changes at 3750-miles. I switched to full-synthetic, and regularly tested the oil. It was still providing good protection at 3x the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals. Less waste, less time, better efficiency, lower cost.

Oils and engines are not the same as they were...there's too many people second-guessing the engineers that design these things. The differences from when your father may have taught you about engines is no longer completely valid, but old practices are really hard to purge from your psyche.

Also the tolerances on engines are so much better in that the running in period was to remove high spots which are no longer there hence less contamination of the oil and no need to change. Ridiculous that BMW ask US owners to have a service twice as often as UK owners on the same car.

Getting back to the original poster's question: it's not imperative that you do the oil change right away, but I'd recommend getting it done in the next 1-2 months. The 12-month oil-change rule is just a general rule of thumb, under the assumption that most of your trips are probably short and/or you don't drive the car much. Oil is inexpensive, so I change my oil every 5K miles on my cars with turbo engines anyway (or annually if I happen to drive one of those cars less than 5K miles).
