Houston, We Have a Problem: Tires

This morning while coming back from the gym my TPMS let me know a tire was low. My driver's side rear is 5-6psi below the other one. Since these are run flats I cannot patch the tire if there is in fact a leak. I'd rather not replace both rears since you need to do them in pairs meaning I'll get a full new set. The 21" tires have virtually no good All Season option as of right now.

The only choice for AS are Pirelli Scorpion Verdes which I haven't heard good things about. Neither Michelin or Pirelli make any good options in their UHP (or really any tire besides what's listed above) so I'm not sure what to do. I considered downsizing to 20" wheels with the following stagger:

275/45 R20
305/40 R20

this would give me a plethora of options but in terms of cost vs sticking with 21"s it's not economical.

Vorsteiner quoted me $2400 + shipping for their flow forged (V-FF) wheels which ain't bad. Typical tires (Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+) run $1400 a set vs $1800 for the 21" Pirellis

Stock tire size:
315/35 R21
275/40 R21

Any thoughts? It's more a matter of what makes sense because I've never used those AS Pirelli Scorpion Verdes but people seem to hate them so I'm stuck with that or downsizing.

You get road hazard protection for a year, subject to tread wear, you should get a new tire as a replacement for the one that doesn’t hold air unless you’re beyond the tread wear limitation.

Pirelli... but your dealer should be able to handle it for you... just google Pirelli OEM road hazard protection, it’s all spelled out.

Runflats can be patched/plugged IF the problem is in the tread area of the tire. Go to reputable tire dealer that sells runflats. Also the tire manufacturer may offer to fix or repair the tire under the terms of their warranty. Good luck.

As long as you haven’t damaged the tire by running very low pressure, like 15 psi or less, you should be able to repair it.

Do NOT try to repair it. Pirelli specifically says not to and that’s why they give you a new tire in replacement. Why repair one when they will give you a free new one?

ETA 1 week for the new tire. Current tire is down to 25psi as of last check in my garage. I'm taking it off and throwing the spare on. Since I need to live with this for a week, I'm going to have it temporarily patched since Pirelli is covering the new one.

Like someone said above - tire can be absolutely repaired and if done properly -hot patch on the inside -vulconizing - and not plugged, it will be a permanent repair.
Run flats only get unrepairable after you drive on them with no preassure. If you stop immediately when flat or have a slow leak- there is no damage to carcass.

I have had several runflats repaired and they were fine. This includes Continental, Michelin and Bridgestone. If Pirelli says their tires CANNOT be repaired this differs from the other manufacturers. That said, if Pirelli is providing a new tire at no cost this is the way to go.

I'm getting it repaired while I wait on the new tire. Generally speaking you should not repair Z or Y rated tires. Here's how it was this morning

edit: looks like it was a screw dead center in the tread

Can you describe how one redeems a tire under the road hazard warranty from Pirelli? I've got a bad leak (full to flat in a day) in one of my fronts, and its only got 1200 miles on it.

BMW dealer was no help with this and said to just buy a new one.

Thanks.

Go into the dealer, or a tire shop and say you want to use the road hazard warranty. They should know what to do, if not call Pirelli and give the service advisor the phone if they're that incompetent.

I downloaded Pirelli's warranty online. Unfortunately OEM tires do not get much road hazard coverage. Good luck and please post the outcome. I bought a wheel/tire policy on my X5 given the high cost of replacements. First time I ever bought one. Covers cosmetic damage as well.

Not sure what you mean by “not much” but as I remember it’s 2/32 of treadwear or one year, whichever comes first.

One year, that's pathetic. Continental gives 3 years. Maybe not on OEMs but when I put DWS06s on my Corvette they have 3 year road hazard coverage.

But we are talking about OEM’s, and more to the point, all you have to do is google Continental’s “road hazard warranty” and have actual information instead of just making it up yourself.
“When an eligible tire has a road hazard condition during the first 2/32nds of an inch (1.6 mm) of treadwear or first 12 months from date of purchase, whichever comes first, the tire will be replaced with a comparable** Continental brand tire free of charge. A road hazard condition is defined as a cut, snag, puncture, bruise, or impact break.”
