Yeah - I don't know then. I just assumed there was a mechanical reason, but to be honest I'm not that up to speed on air suspension and how it works.

I seriously doubt BMW would limit their chance to make extra money though. So if someone wants Air for another $1,500 and DHP on top of that for another $2,000 why would they not offer it?

Purely conjecturing and most likely for a product and marketing distinction between X7 and X5s. BMW offers 4 suspension options on the X5 and 1 on X7.

EARS (electronic active roll stabilization) is available with air suspension on 7 (optioned with Autobahn package) and X7 (optioned with Dynamic Handling package) Series.

What's interesting is that G12/G07 air suspension struts are EDC High two-stage (4-wheel separate rebound and compression stage controller) and leverage a more complex vertical dynamics platform (VDP) control unit for self leveling suspension (function logic).

Compared to the G05, the air suspension struts are EDC High single-stage (shared rebound and compression stage controller) and simpler electronic ride height control (EHC) for self leveling.

The air suspension in the G05 is controlled by a 3-channel control system, where the two air suspension struts of the front axle are jointly controlled and the air suspension struts of the rear axle are controlled separately. It's able to compensate for any tilting of the vehicle rear axle that occurs due to uneven load conditions. The inertia of the G05 air suspension system cannot react to driving dynamics disturbance variables, which may occur when the vehicle is driven quickly on twisting roads.

In the future BMW could consolidate suspension options on X5/X7s and communicated they're listening (taken with a grain of salt) by offering DHP option on 40i's sometime in 2020 - still waiting for this option to materialize in the USA - maybe 2021 models:

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...or-autumn-2019

"The Adaptive M suspension Professional optionally available for the new BMW X5 gives it far greater poise in dynamic driving situations. This optional extra, comprising active roll stabilisation, the M Sport differential and Integral Active Steering, will also be available for the BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X5 xDrive30d from December 2019."

Maybe off point, but...I have AS and I found that I could not adjust ride height when in trailer/towing mode. I didn’t get out and measure ride height before/after loading the trailer with a yard of dirt with significant tongue weight, but it didn’t “seem” like there was any difference. That’s pretty nice, however if I were to pull a loaded trailer over some jeep roads, I would like the added ride height. I guess I could stop and take it out of trailer/towing mode for those occasions, but why is the default that way?

One thing I find curious about all the "we have bad roads in <insert everyone's region> so I need air suspension" is the fact that I've not seen anyone state "we have great road around here". Ever. Makes you go hmmm ... yet there are a couple of people here and there that still are somehow driving on metal rather than air ;-).

Excellent point! But I can take a few pics of SE Michigan's cratered roads if I need to make my case.

BTW, I just want to thank all of you in this forum. In 20+ years of joining online forums I don't recall a bigger response to a first question. Seems like a really passionate group of people willing to help!

Sure, but this will turn into self-pitying oneupmanship for the worst roads. I'll start ...

The roads in Chicago really need some fixing... But air suspension to the rescue!

I'm in Chicago too and actually still find the G05's air suspension too firm in comfort mode for pot hole purposes (I know, how ridiculous does that sound?).

I had a F10 5 series, and the road I'm thinking about is lake shore drive, going north right before you hit Roosevelt. There are some MAJOR "bumps" that stick out and on the F10 it was distributed and doesn't shock the cabin. But on the G05 in comfort mode it felt really hard when it hit the cabin to the point where my kid gets scared. I don't get why because the air suspension is so comfortable otherwise.

Lake shore drive is just awful, which is sad because it's so iconic. Could it be that area has gotten worse and that's why even the G05 is having issues dealing with it smoothly? Maybe back in your F10 days it wasn't as bad? Just a thought.

Lucky for me I live out in the burbs where roads are generally better. It's only when we visit the city that we deal with those craters for potholes.

No I'm talking within a couple of months. That "bump" has always been there (Actually a couple).

Literally just took delivery Monday so only have 10 miles so far driving home. I can tell that putting the air suspension in sport tightens up things pretty good, including the steering. No its not going to be a sports car, but its damn fun for an SUV!
