Moving from a staggered 22" setup to a square 20"
I'm considering getting rid of my 22" staggered wheels and trading for a 20" square setup on my 2020 BWM X5 M50i. Any considerations to keep in mind? Will the rear alignment need to be adjusted? Do I need spacers for the rear wheels?

depending on your wheel offset, spacers may be needed to attain OEM wheel base or a more aggressive one, if desired. I would definitely recommend a 4-wheel alignment after the switch, though.

If you don’t have an alignment issue to begin with, you don’t need to do alignment by switching to the 20 oem setup. Switching to a different offset wheel or adding spacer, yeah you should.

275/45R20 all around. my wheels are ET27 offset, so ended up with 18mm rear spacers only

Looking good! Thank you.
I used to do the flush thing, but nowadays, my pathetic old but would rather not get the wheel spray on the paint. Don't get me wrong, I like the look, no question, but at my age I have to pick my battles. Edit: What's your take on your wheels? Why 275 instead of 295? i actually didn't go aggressive. the offset i chose pushed the front wheels out 10mm and rear wheels 14mm (w/spacer) from OEM stance. 275/45R20 all around is US-spec as wheels are 9" wide. going wider can pose clearance issues with the front steering components or wheel rub. if you look at OEM tire specs for all wheel sizes offered for the G05 from 18" to 22", the widest front tire is 275. using wider tires technically accomplishes the "wider stance/look" differently than spacers. a wider tire can affect both inside and outside clearance whereas spacers affects the outside. of course, wheel offset plays a part. 275 is better for snow traction comparatively, is OEM spec, is more readily available for purchase and less likely to pose problems with service at the dealership or indy tire shops being OEM spec Last edited by nZtiZia; 04-06-2024 at 09:31 AM.. |

My fronts are 295 from the factory; I guess I made a bad assumption thinking any X5 could run a stock width.
The rest of it all makes sense once you view it through that lens. I'm thinking square for year around though, not for snow, which is seldom seen in my area. Do you feel like you have more squirm now or does the steering feel remain stock? Did you step down in diameter, and if so, was the ride improved? |

i rarely drive in the snow as well, and i actually switched from 21" staggered to the 20" squared setup after a month of ownership. they're all-season RFT so they're year-round. all-season RFT do not exist in OEM 21" staggered setup, and i was not happy rolling in summer performance tires in the middle of winter i've not experienced any steering issues or loss of road handling whatsoever. going down in wheel size doesn't change the diameter of the tires from OEM because the tire specs changed to follow suit (from 275/40R21 to 275/45R20), so no hit on speedometer or odometer accuracy. one can say ride quality "improved" going from 21" to 20" but with standard air suspension on mine, cruising is no different, yet i do feel less jolting rolling over potholes and prominent road features on the 20" |

Yeah, much more traffic here and people take wheels from one and move them to the other at times.
Understand about the tires, but you're increasing rubber to wheel ratio and the more rubber the easier it is to roll them over, you feel more squish, etc. I wouldn't think it's pronounced but I was curious. I don't have any track plans anyway, but I'd like to retain the perky feel. Being old when I see big wheels I don't think cool, I think lost performance. So for me going down is more a matter of it just plain not looking truckish rather than anything else and to me your's looks good. It would seem + 10 will keep the stock diameter very close, .2 inches taller if I go to twenties square. The fronts could retain the stock ET but the rears would need spacers or be covered with the wheels. That sound about right? |

FWIW, EU-spec 20" on the G05 is actually staggered, for reference: 275/45R20 front 305/40/R20 rear the rear wheel width is wider than the front (10.5" vs 9"), so both front tires/wheels are different than rear tires/wheels. thus, tire rotation can only occur on the same axle. folks over there have reported limited rear tire size availability, though, so some thing(s) to consider. |
