cold startup exhaust sound 50i

At startup the exhaust sounds really beefy then quiets down considerably almost to where i think the engine shut off. Is this the exhaust flap i have read about? If its open at startup can it just be unplugged when the engine is cold or is there a setting.

No, it revs up to warm the cats then idles down, flaps are always closed at startup from what I've seen. One side also stays closed completely at startup for the above reason which could be why it sounds louder for cold starts

Are you in “sport mode” when starting? Both sides are open in any temp starts.

Not my video but this is what “sport mode” sounds like on a cold start.

Update:

Here is one I just did with my phone:

That's odd, in my M40i only one side is open during start up so it can warm up faster then both open when it's at temp and idles down. I figured since my car is a refreshed X3 the X5 would be the same. Thanks fo posting that, I will surely lean about my X5 whenever BMW feels it wants to make my Week 51 build...

The startup sequence has been common to most, if not all BMW engines for quite some time now. It's purpose is to heat up the catalytic converters faster. Engine mapping is changed, timing is a little different, mixture is a little different, all to make the exhaust hotter, heating the cats up faster, because they don't do what they do until they are above a certain temperature.
This is not done because it sounds cool. It is not done with exhaust flaps, and the increased volume is not just because the idle is held at a slightly higher RPM. In fact, on my car, the idle is not changed at all, yet it is a lot louder for about 45 seconds on startup. Purely done with engine mapping and purely done for emissions reasons. And if you have fake sound piped through your speakers, this is not coming from that.

Both sides will open, but only one exhaust tip per side. On startup, one flap per side is closed regardless of sport or comfort.

You can see it on a cold morning.

It is the wastegates being opened so all the exhaust gas going straight to the catalytic to warming it up.
Not the muffler flap.

I just noticed that. Exhaust coming out of both sides but one pipe per side on cold start, (the two inside pipes). Then all 4 pipes open up when warm.

I have read about folks wanting to trick some type of flap to stay open. Is this something that pertains to me?
