Is there a big difference between the exhaust sound in a 40i with m sport package VS a sound of a M50i? (Especially pops and backfire crackles)

Both has M sport exhaust system equipped.

I am driving a M50i and I love the sound. But never drives a 40i with m sport package, only test drive a xline one. Thanks.

Yes two different motors. 40I inline 6, M50I V8. They will never sound the same.

Yes a huge different in exhaust notes between the 40 and 50. The booming V8TT sound cant be confused with anything else. YouTube has plenty of videos on the difference.

There is plenty of M50i exhaust video. But can't find 40i, when I search'x5 40i exhaust', most are just cold start without pushing the paddle. Ended up found some 840i exhaust videos , however they are from Korean market, not sure about US market....

The MSport package for the 40i does not include the MSport exhaust, only the M50i has it.

OIC, thanks. Then is 40i with m sport exhaust the same sound with M50i?

No. The 50 with M-Sport exhaust has a V8 and is significantly louder and deeper in tone. Different zip code. We had a initial thread on this last year. The 40 M sport exhaust is very tame. The 50 without M-Sport exhaust is louder than the 40i with M-Sport exhaust.

Go to 20:15. This was even in a very acoustically live parking garage.

Just not possible. A turbo straight 6 just will never sound like a V8 TT. The 'character' of the sound will be totally different, regardless of loudness.

Good video, but I noticed the guy in the video did everything in 'sport individual' instead of 'sport plus'. Not sure if there is a difference if he use sport plus. I found a 840i video of exhaust sound, not even close to the m850i.

Does 50i/M50i have much more pops and backfire crackles? That's what I care the most

In Canada the Msport package includes Msport exhaust. You can hear a much sportier, deeper exhaust note in Sports mode. I really don't care if its thru the speakers, exhaust or both. It sounds good to me!

Does it have a lot of pops and backfire crackles as well?

In Europe, NO POPS OR BACKFIRE.

But then I had an M8 Comp last week, at neither did that! 850 did. Every year these cars are going to get quieter in Europe (for good reason of course, but still!).

I've had them both. The 50 rumbles very strong until it warms up, to the point I kept the garage closed early mornings. The 40 is pretty tame in comparison.

Don't even think about the 40i if that is what you're looking for. M50i will pop and crackle a bit more than 50i with m-sport, but the latter is still pretty good. But it's extra $$$. My advice, would be 50i with m-sport and put the extra $$$ towards a nice set of 22" rims with 315s in the rear. If money is not an issue, just wait for the x5 m.

I'm sure there's some Apples and Oranges to this, but take it for what it's worth. My wife has a 2019 X3 M40i, I assume it's an Msport exhaust as well. Her car is VERY loud on start up, and has lots of pops and crackles during operation in SPORT mode.

I have a 2020 X6 M50i. It is also loud on start up. They sound NOTHING alike. My car has very little pop and crackle during normal operation.

Her M40 exhaust is much "busier" than my M50 exhaust during operation, both in SPORT mode. My M50 sounds generally better, but that's subjective.

I've read that they toned things down in 2020 around the exhaust sounds on other threads.
