For planned recalls such as this, does BMW fix these for the vehicles that are in production or would those have to be taken in for the recalls as well?

I don't think so. BMW addressed this specific recall when my car got upgraded to .55 but it didn't fix the issue in the OP (or as originally demonstrated by LexxM3 )

The non luxury cars that I rented are switching correctly. You'd think this is one of those low hanging fruits that can be fixed easily in your next software release but not with BMW

Reversing 3D Camera View -> click front camera icon (w/"A") to activate. From then on the camera automatically switches when go from from D/R and also as you get closer to something the camera does a tops down view. I also noticed it will show the 3D view of the fenders as it gets close to a column. One thing to note is that the front camera icon sometimes disappears. If you tap the car it will reappear. This method seems to work for me for the last few times I have tried it. |

The X5 went in today. They said they have the software to perform the recall. They'll check the X5 against the reported recall.

No, it is not.
The recall was for a totally different issue - one that does not affect most of us. Currently, you can adjust the brightness and contrast until the display is almost invisible (not sure why anyone would do this, other than some kids may have been playing around with the settings) - this settings is retained even after you turned the car off and restart; and in that case, you won't be able to see the camera view when you put the car in reverse. The recall simply adjusts the brightness and contrast settings whenever you restart the car so that the camera view is always visible by default. |

Definitely seems a bit random when the auto camera mode pops up. Most of the time it's off, but every once in a while when I put it reverse it will be in auto mode.

I find it's consistent, but wrong. If you activate camera by switch to reverse, it switches reverse and forward properly. If you activate camera with button, it won't follow properly after the first forward-to-reserve sequence. It does seem intentional, but the intent is idiotic.

Since 07/2019.5x, at least for me, it no longer works that way. Once you go into reverse and it switches to the rear it will not come back to the front automatically.

Yes, they definitely changed something. Now if they would only change it so it works correctly in all situations, one wouldn't think that was a monumental task.

When I reverse out of my driveway into the alley my camera is in rear view. When I enter the alley and put the vehicle into Drive the rear camera goes off. I didn't notice any change when I had my software update a few weeks ago. I guess I am just lucky.

I know that once I take the car out of Reverse the rear camera goes off. I'll check tomorrow what screen appears.

Just confirmed that when I shift from Reverse to Drive the rear camera goes off and my home screen comes on. This usually happens after I have moved forward about 10 feet.

Ok thanks. That is what is happening with mine and is the bug we are discussing. It used to switch to the front camera as soon as the gear changed from reverse to drive but now the rear camera stays on until it goes to the home screen.

Seems silly for the forward camera to come on if I'm backing out of a parking spot and pulling out. I can see wanting the forward camera for parallel parking, so when I go from reverse to drive, I would want it to switch then. Or pulling into a spot. In both of these cases you would hit the camera button first. |

There is a reason the cameras have an automatic mode which used to work until the 07.2019.53 update. |

Is the update specific for the backup camera or a complete update?

I just checked with my buddy's XC60 and a Nissan and both exhibit the same behavior. If the backup camera is initialized by putting the car in reverse, it stays that way for a brief time while in drive and then shuts off. To me this is logical, but maybe because this is what I'm accustomed to.
