VRTune?

Is anyone running the VR tune for the 40i? Curious on how it feels and works vs something like the JB4. I have always done the flash style of tuning on my other cars vs the piggybacks. Also not clear from their site if they have the capability to flash via the OBD or if you have to mail your ECU to them for a bench flash. You can add a handheld unit from the drop down but in the description it mentions bench flashing.

For that option you would send your ECU/DME to them.

I wonder what good it does then to pay the extra money for the Dimsport Genius they have as an add in option. I sent them an email but haven’t heard back yet for clarification.

Anyone have the tune?

I believe the handheld option you’re referring to just allows you to change different tuning maps, there are some YouTube videos and other forums that mention the tune I have found.

a flash tune in general has more capabilities than piggyback. In the case of VR, you have to send them your ECU to be flashed. It's not a cheap process.

For the money, I would do home flash like Bootmod3, if not possible i'd go with the Jb4.

I don’t think BM3 is available for a 2021 40i at least that I saw but the JB4 looks like a decent option. I’ve never run a piggyback before so just leery of going that way vs a flash tune.

Bootmod3 is not available, I confirmed this a few weeks ago sadly. With the JB4 you will need to commit to date logging maps and having them fuel tune your car- not a bad thing just more time intensive. The 2020+ BMW’s are really proving to be quite the headache when obtaining a high quality ECU tune. Really, the best option is to remove your DME and send it for an on-site bench flash (Purcell at Heatsync, DME etc).

No need to datalog with the Jb4 as long as you using the recommended map for your fuel octane

Map0: Stock tuning, fully disable JB4
Map1: Additive map with peak of 3psi over stock added (91 octane)
Map2: Additive map with peak of 4psi over stock added (91-93 octane)
Map3: Additive map with peak of 6psi over stock added (93+ octane)
Map4: Absolute target map with peak of 20psi target (93+ and/or E30 octane) suggested for higher boost models like G chassis, Supra, and Z4. EWG required for proper control.
Map5: Absolute target map with peak of 22psi target (E30+ fuel) suggested for higher boost models like G chassis, Supra, and Z4. EWG required for proper control.
Map6: Custom tuning map allowing both additive (below 10psi) and absolute (above 10psi) targeting. Setting RPM1500 boost below 5.7psi will make entire map6 additive, setting above 6psi will make entire map6 absolute target.
Map7: WMI map (boost varies based on WMI additive, meth flow, and other criteria)
Map8: VALET / Low Boost Map

Appreciate that info! So theoretically I could run 93 octane with my downpipes and just install the JB4 and keep it on Map 2 and it should work perfectly fine? Would colder spark plugs even be needed in that scenario?

Yes you can run map 2 and you are set.

If your spark plugs are in good condition, you won't need to change them now but eventually, you will have to. I recommend you do it either way now so you do not have to worry about misfires later.

it depends.

the ECU uses load tables, which means the boost will depend on the conditions. it's not like a piggyback where you assign a target boost and it's always the same
