The OTA for the US started rolling out last week for the vehicles that are already running 8.5. Checking for a new version doesn't do anything as BMW sends to specific vehicles/phones in some unknown order.

I have an s40i LCI that had 07/2023.40 on it and was upgraded to 07/2023.53 last week.

Like OTA updates with many products the upgrades are phased in over time to everyone in case a new problem is discovered.

I took my x40i LCI to the BMW service last Monday, they told me it might be a problem with the bluetooth antenna and suggested replacing the whole unit. I got my service scheduled for 27 Nov, but this morning I got a push notification that my car will get 8.5 update soon. Hopefully the software upgrade fixes it.

I would strongly recommend you update the software (either you do it, or the dealer does it) first before taking drastic action replacing the antenna. We all pretty much have (or had) the same issues with phone connectivity, and newer versions of 07/2023 address mostly the issue.

In any case, you dont want to have to replace the BT antenna unless absolutely necessary as it involves removing the center console.

Using a iPhone 14 Pro Max with latest iOS, X5e50 has latest software. Both Bluetooth and AirPlay have issues at different time connecting / reconnecting. Expecting to perform soft reset on either car or connect / disconnet phone BT / WiFi is just not a good customer experience. Feels this was rushed for launch and the BMW team is hoping to resolve with various OTA fixes but really for a $100k car we expect better - The ultimate driving machine is more of a ultimate software bug. Don't get me started on the automated driving and parking issues they are terrible - absolutely stupid implementation!

Again, that means nothing. What version of iDrive are you running? When did you go to the dealer to have it updated and why did they update it?

We try to help each other but being evasive on information will not allow people to give you ideas. We have not heard of any connection issues on the latest versions so also trying to gather information.

IDrive 8.5 updated 3weeks ago by dealer and iOS 17.1.1 both systems have been soft reset and reconnected several times. Overall a very poor customer experience and very disappointing support from BMW …. Let’s discuss how poorly the parking assist features work - which are a joke!

In case you don't know how to get the version you are running, going to All Apps -> System Settings -> Remote Software Upgrade will show you the version you are running

Thank you. Will double check ultimately we want it to work as advertised it should not fall on the customer to trouble shoot this. The responsibility lies with the manufacturer just my two cent.

Yes but there are fixes that have been released but not all dealers are installing them. We just had a member's dealer insist that 07/2023.45 was the latest out and they didn't update him even though he was in for a CEL fix. The latest we have seen has been 11/2023.25 but that likely will change shortly.

My wife and I have both noticed that using wireless android auto works pretty reliably with both of our phones unless we put them on the charge pad. It seems to interfere with the wifi part of the connection sequence.

My software just got updated to the latest release, unfortunately it did not help. Bluetooth option is not even visible in the menu. I think in my case this is a hardware issue :/

I picked up my X5 M60i 2 weeks ago. First week, everything was fine with CarPlay. That only lasted a few days. This morning I couldn't get to it to connect again. I deleted the phone from Carplay, Bluetooth and the car. Tried reconnecting but that didn't work. I hope they fix this as Google Maps / Waze is the only thing that one can rely on in my region.

Did you try restarting IDrive system? ( push in the volume knob for 30 seconds etc)

That usually worked for me. Also when you add back the iPhone make sure “ Use hey siri” is not checked. This does not solve the problem but it seems to make it happen less often.

Hopefully you get the OTA update soon.

Not yet. I just dropped the car off for PPE wrapping. I told the garage the issue and also shared this thread in hopes they see that this is a more common problem. I do suspect the programmers in Munich are aware of the issue though.

Recently, I noticed that if the vehicle is parked and you return to it with someone else close by using an iPhone, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth turned on, iDrive 8.5 will try to pair that phone instead of the driver's phone knocking you off. Only when you start from scratch pairing the driver's phone to CarPlay will it continue to work. That has been the only issue since the 8.5 upgrade.

I finally got the OTA update, and while it bricked my car during the update. (Seriously had to tow it with a dolly, since you couldn't disable the e-brake) Once that was fixed at the dealership, the Carplay now actually works properly.

I don't drive it as much, so it may not be perfect, but it does at least work.

So I was on vacation for over a week and just got back. CarPlay didn’t work again but your tip with the reset brought it back. Thanks for that. I’ll keep an eye on it.

The issue got finally fixed for me. In my case it was a hardware issue, and they had to replace the whole head unit. My car is X5 xdrive 40i LCI.
