Break-In Proceedure
M60i
The driver's guide says 1,200 miles below 4500 RPM and 100MPH for break-in. The car's RPM is locked for another 120 miles with 204 on the clock. Is the driver's guide out of date? In my last M, I was told to keep RPMs down until the 1200-mile oil change. Which holds true? Opinions? |

Engine, transmission, and axle drive Up to 1,200 miles/2,000 km Do not exceed the maximum engine and road speed: With gasoline engine:4500 rpm and 100 mph/160 km/h. Avoid full throttle or kickdown under all circumstances. From 1,200 miles/2,000 km The engine and vehicle speed can gradually be increased. Tires Tire traction is not optimal due to manufacturing circumstances when tires are brand new. Drive conservatively for the first 200 miles/300 km. Brake system Brake disks and brake pads must be run in to avoid possible brake noise. Drive cautiously for the first approx. 300 miles/500 km. |

agreed, follow the manual. the engineers say to follow break in, same engineers also say some of the fluids never need to be changed. thus, break-in must be important.

It is a marketing document. The development team probably has never seen it, not to mention writing it. 😅. Not saying it doesn’t have good information, just it isn’t about engineering. Lawyers may more say.

Who says that all these "guidelines" are gospel from the BMW engineering gods. Those who swear by this breakin stuff which seems to vary greatly as time goes on simply assume all this comes directly from the guys who blueprinted every thing. Probably not a perfectly valid assumption to make but if the manual says so than it has to be right, right? Last edited by cobramite; 12-09-2023 at 02:38 PM.. |

On the flip side what harm does it do to follow the break-in instructions in the manual? Now if it does come from the BMW engineers and you don't follow the manual then you could cause some harm. Better safe than sorry is my mantra.

The break in procedure is recommended by the same engineers that say the fluids are good for life. So there must be some importance in it.

it’s been mentioned in other threads that with the amount of data logged and saved in these vehicles’ computers, if something happens to the engine or related parts and they see you didn’t follow break-in, you could be SOL with a warranty claim…
