Hi everyone,

I have always used PayPal as my payment application for transactions on this forum. Knock on wood, I have never had an issue in about 100 transactions, works like a charm and it seems like everyone is protected to some extent. I get that there is a price for that protection and I don’t really need help with Paypal, I know most of the pro’s and cons.

However, my most recent seller is demanding that I use Zelle for my purchase from him and I don’t know anything about it... He claims he has been burned twice using PayPal. As I don’t know anything about Zelle, I was hoping someone could explain it to me. I feel it could benefit not just me but the whole Bimmerpost community as well.

I only deal with Zelle/Quick pay when dealing direct. As they immediately get the cash and that's the end of it. Offer to pay the 3% PayPal fees for goods & services.

If someone refuses to use PayPal, that’s a red flag. The person you are dealing with is likely trying to scam you.

Maybe he was burned twice, because PayPal for goods and services (3% fee one) gives the buyer protections of what you buy isn't correct. And Zelle is a direct payment, so it won't provide any of the same. If you get burned there's little recourse with Zelle, so it's a perfect medium for scammers trying to pull a fast one. I'd walk away, unless the person is very very well known on the forums and can be vouched for by other active members.

zelle is a good for quick easy transactions but there is 0 protection for transactions if you get burned. Once you send him the money on zelle its gone and the only way to get it back is for the person you paid to send it back.

Zelle is essentially a glorified bank wire. I only use it with people that I know. If you cannot meet the buyer then you as the seller just pay the 3% via paypal. Buyer is really demanding?

PayPal for forums like this ( protection )
Zelle for family and friends or meet up transaction.

If person refuses PayPal they very well could be a scammer. I would pass on doing business with this individual.

As others have stated, Zelle is for people you know, like family, baby sitters, housekeepers, etc. It is not a good way to buy products from a stranger.

I use PayPal good and services all the time. I got burned before using PayPal gift. Using PayPal gift is the same thing as using Zelle. 0 protection.

Is the seller you're referring to @11LMBiSTT by any chance? Because I've bought from this seller before, he's excellent with communication, shipping and transparency. He just sticks out to me as one of the few I've seen on here only accepting Zelle. You can trust this seller if this is who you're referring to.

Here's the story... He wants my BBS LM-R's, at a very favorable price after asking for a trade + cash lowball, then going back and forth with me on straight sale pricing and complaining about needing a spacer up front for f8x fitment, then getting my last/lowest sale price, then said he would get back to me after getting his bonus, then coming at me again with 250 lower than my last/lowest price, then agreeing to my last/lowest price, then asking for tpms when I didn't mention any and then sends me a picture of his backyard saying he is a multi millionaire and isn't some teenage scammer and wants to use PayPal... essentially he is a bit of a pain to deal with and doesn't trust me/Zelle, which is fine with me. I suggested if he had friends or family in So Cal to have them come check them out and pick them up in person.

Also, to say I'm demanding to use Zelle is a bit of a play on words... my for sale ad and the disclosed selling terms clearly say that open to shipping if Zelle is used for payment, or Venmo, Wire or Bank Deposit as a last resort. As everyone has experienced, sellers accept different payment methods, not all.

When I sell something, its either local in-person sale or if buyer really wants me to ship they need to trust me and use Zelle/Venmo/Wire or Bank Deposit. I point them to my iTrader rating to assure them of my rep, rating, reviews and tenure.

And if thats not good enough, we don't move forward and I don't ship, simple. I don't recommend that with everyone though, just reputable individuals with reviews/ratings. If the buyer and seller are straightforward, transparent, reasonable people with good communication there should be no issues. If there are any issues besides something on the shipping company, simply document on delivery, contact seller immediately and return to seller immediately for a full refund. There are good sellers and buyer out there. PayPal doesn't weed out all the bad or good apples out there. There are loopholes in PayPal, which I rather not get in to.

Simply put, if buyer and seller don't agree on terms there's no need to move forward.

This topic actually brings up a good point...is there a section on the forum where we can list verified buyers and sellers? For example, I am on the watchuseek forum and they have an entire section dedicated to verified buyers and sellers. Its also a place to "out" those who are not good or reputable. Basically when you have a good buying or selling experience, you post it on the thread and then future buyers and sellers can search the username and find out if the person they are dealing with is legit.

We have iTrader system which is like eBay feedback.

I actually refuse to use PayPal now. I sold a like new condition $2500 camera lens on a photography forum and accepted PayPal as the method of transaction. I got burnt by the seller who a few days later after receiving the lens said the lens was damaged (glass elements scratched). The lens was in pristine condition, but he was able to make a PayPal claim for a refund, despite the fact that the he probably causes the damage. Considering how well packed the lens was, no damage souls have occurred during shipping.

So my 2 cents to the conversation is that their are buyer scammers that use PayPal policies to their benefit as well. Since than any gear I’ve sold has been in person or within Canada using ETF and rely on my seller ratings on those sites.

I’d be really leary if accepting PayPal as form of payment if I was selling a car - have no idea what kind of claim a buyer could get away with. For a car sale, I’d only do cash sale with someone local, or someone willing to travel and pickup and pay cash/draft (ETF limits would be too low).

this is the problem with paypal--it offers double protection for buyers. if you dispute with PP and your claim gets denied, you can just call your credit card company and file a chargeback. your CC company is way more likely to side with you, even if you're just straight up scamming. happens to us everyday (ecommerce). people file chargebacks and essentially get free stuff.
