Very poor on a car just over 3 years old so I'm considering legal action against the selling dealer as it seems to be a design feature given how common this is and therefore I think I can get them to resolve under consumer rights law.
I wish Canada protected the consumer as good as they do in US and UK

Also after having the TCB/TCM replaced my version is back to 2022.44? so my update will not update now even though I had 2022.58 before -- I am super confused.

What is the number before the 2022? Pretty sure the 07 OTA was at .58 and the .44 was for 11 done through a dealer.

OTA updates have been at least one major version behind the current.

When my module crapped out, the maps and gps worked fine but after about 2 weeks, it had me driving in a different province and even through a lake. I mentioned about water seeping in through the antenna mount and was told that was only an issue for cars that have their car wrapped, typical dealer spin

I just had my tcb module replaced on Friday after having it crap out on me in April. Waited a month for the parts. I had just bought the used X5 at the end of March, so not a good start.

The dealer put tape on the shark fin the help “cure” the seal which was supposed to be on for 48 hours. I picked up the car Saturday morning and proceeded on my 4.5hr drive home. Sunday and Monday we got some crazy blast of rain and when taking the X5 out for the first time since Saturday afternoon, the malfunction warning came back on. Then went away and came back again numerous times.

It will go back to the dealer for diag and hopefully a proper fix

I just got this message yesterday as well. Will call my service advisor today to make an appointment but hope its just a dead battery (2019 x5).

Its actually driving me crazy. Message pops up every couple minutes, goes away and then comes back up again. Combined with the chime and lowering my music volume. Very disturbing.

Took my 2019 50i in today for this this error (and OTA upgrade failure). Was told the same as everyone else, water leak due to shark fin glue failing. I was quoted $2,850 to fix because I'm six months out of the New Vehicle Warranty and its not covered under CPO/7 year wrap. Cute. Dealer offered 80/20 split. I just spoke with BMW NA and was told I should be happy with that and not complain. Hugely disappointing.

Still waiting to get mine back after four days (+a weekend) in the shop. I was supposed to be done yesterday afternoon (after three days in the shop), but the tech decided he "wasn't happy with how the glue set" and needed to redo it. Hard to feel anything but frustrated over the situation, but my advisor has really gone to bat for me by getting the dealership to cover 80% and scrambling to get me into a loaner over the weekend (even if it was just a 330i). Here's to hoping this solves it.

I had same issue but bmw dealer didn’t go through with the repair (even tho they kept the car for 3 days) bc they “couldn’t replicate the issue after they reset the software”

The service advisor also said while I was picking up the car, that the issue will most likely come up again, but they just need to show live repro so they can get it covered under warrenty.

They did say it would take 3 days to do the repair since they have to replace the entire shark fin, and that requires removing the head liner, and painting the new shark fin, etc.

Bummer to hear they didn’t set it correctly with the glue the first time. It seems like a lot of X5s having issues with shark fin area getting water in it causing all these issues.

I was just quoted a whopping $3416.32 to replace the TCB unit, antenna and fin. Ridiculous.
I bought this car a month ago with 90 days Autonation warranty. They deny coverage for these parts.

Anyone any advise?

Yea Autonation doesn’t seem to be best franchise at keeping their word, etc.
sorry to hear about your issues too.
Is it a persistent CEL issue for the SOS system?

You could try to just replace the shark fin antenna battery (search forums for it). But service center told me there are two classes of issues
1) the small battery in the shark fin, ~$150
2) the entire shark in assembly $3k+

Thanks for the suggestion. Im still trying to have Autonation cover the repair, if they don’t bulge I will try to just replace the battery.
Cant believe BMW didnt do a recall knowing how many cars are affected with a bad seal.

Same here...

Add my 2019 X5 M-Sport to the list. Water leak at the shark fin fried the TCB. Same "Emergency call System Malfunction" and the BMW call center repeatedly getting called by my vehicle with no way of turning it off.

I must have gotten lucky and had the rest of the module go out so the calls eventually stopped after about two hours of driving in the rain.

Same problem with GPS thinking I'm someplace else. Also noticed that Apple CarPlay couldn't hear me, so something took out the audio input to this part of the system.

The repair was stupid expensive for what seems to be a design or manufacturing flaw with this vehicle based on all of the responses here.

Just got my vehicle back from my mechanic today, and I'm feeling quite frustrated at what feels like a defect.

How does one get BMW to pay attention to issues like this and to do the right thing?

Your repair was in the same ballpark as what they’ve quoted me? Like $3600?

Mine came back so they replaced everything under warranty a while back. Happened again a month before warranty was over (thank god)... and I found out they didnt replace the battery when replacing tcb, fine and other boards. So if you are getting this done ask for the battery to be replaced. I told them I am coming back because I have CPO and 24months warranty work on direct items replaced to do it right this time.

Heres to hoping. Really love this car and plan to keep it.
