Buy 2020 or wait for 2021

I have received pricing on a 2020 X5 40i but am curious if it's realistic to get this same pricing (discount of about 10%) when the 2021 MY is available for ordering. I am concerned about the depreciation. When the new MY rolls out in a couple of months, it will already be valued as last year's model.

Of course discounts vary by region but most areas seemed to be getting around 10% off prior to discounts/incentives. This discount seemed to be available at the beginning of the model year also. Hopefully some members from TX chime in.

Based on the backlog of cars that BMW is dealing with due to the factories being closed for a month I wonder if dealers could even put in a 2020 X5 build at this point. I know some people with orders placed in April were straight up cancelled by BMW without even telling the dealers so they were scrambling to re-order cars.

The switch over to 2021 is in July which is right around the corner.

That means all of us with 2020 model years, we can claim "limited release" models and improve our resale!!

Thanks, Alan. This will be my first BMW and I am not sure how pricing is on the new MY once released. I have been offered good pricing on the 2020 and worry about not being able to get about the same discount on a 2021. Have you ordered when the MY was first available? I'm curious to know if dealers typically don't discount then.

I would wait for 2021. You will not likely get a good enough discount to offset the instant MY depreciation. I made this mistake once. Never again. Plus, more options could be available (hopefully DHP on the 40i)

I actually ordered an x5 today; dealer told me delivery in a month.
I too considered waiting on 2021 release.

What kind of discount did you get and how did the first 2 payments being paid work.

I'm not one to hassle a lot when it comes to buying a car, and I live in Indianapolis, only 1 dealer, unless you want to drive to Lafayette, Cincinnati, or Chicago.

They gave me 3% off msrp. When you add in $1000 credit for return customer + $2500 credit to finance, it comes out to 8% off msrp.

I didn't need the financing, thus didn't negotiate when first payment would be. Dealer asked me to make 4 payments before paying off the car.

I cross shopped a Jeep Grand Cherokee summit. Bmw gave me $36k trade in on my 2017 540xi. Jeep would only give me $31k, and that sealed the deal for me. I presume bmw is going to turn my car into a cpo.

My client advisor is super easy to deal with. I have bought more than 10 cars from him and referred many others, including many members on this forum. PM me if any of you is in the market for an in stock unit or a custom order.

How much off msrp are you guys gettin pre incentives? I had my X5 m50 that I ordered in March cancelled By bmw and then I could not order another one in May due to stock shortage or production issues or whatever the dealerships were telling me with that model. Also the discount was insane in March on the m50 .... around 11.4% pre incentives! The X5 40 m sport I ended up ordering May 20th was only 6% Off pre incentives... Apparently bmw no longer needed to meet sales quotas

This. 40i took a hit in options in 2021, but maybe not any you wanted - look carefully. No acoustic glass, no Ametrin color, no leather dash, no Night Vision, no IAS, no B&W, no Luggage Package. Off the top of my head. Likely others....

No integrated active steering either. This is the biggest loss in my mind.

That would be IAS, and yes, a biggie for me - enough that I might shop other badges. Not particularly interested in a V8 SUV, for a whole bunch of reasons. Fortunately, my 2020 40is have all of those missing options plus, so good for the time being, but BMW better re-think for those of us who want a fully optioned car, only separated from those that can be fully optioned by the powerplant.
