[QUOTE=sygazelle;26951022]I bought the ZT741. According to the fitment guide, this is the size that fits my 275/45/R20 tires.
How did it go with this snow chain? Works well? |

I bought them but I have not put them on yet. They are designed for my size so I'm not worried about them fitting. The thing is, I never expect to have to put them on. My schedule is flexible to go to the mountains so I avoid storm conditions. If a surprise storm comes up while I'm there, I can just wait a day or two. Mostly, I bought them to show the CHP at checkpoints. If I do get stuck in a chains-required situation, I've got them. |

Yeah, I am planning to do the same. But in case CHP actually does requires that the chain is put on, I am curious how's the fitting. But given the stay-at-home order and hotels in CA regions not allowed to take non-essential workers, I think a lot of us won't be hitting Tahoe anytime soon... |

The drought isn't helping matters either... 2020 keeps on giving.
That said, will probably end up running my own version of "Mogul Ski Club." Vivid memories of getting on a bus at the Safeway in San Mateo at 4am to go skiing for the day. Bus got to Tahoe around 9am... ski the day and get back on the bus at 4pm to go home. Covid version: wake the kids up and get on the road by 5am. Drive straight to Tahoe, with no stops. Take advantage of any EV parking + charging at mountain. Offload with bagged lunches for day of socially isolated skiing. Return to car by 3pm and drive home in time for dinner... should be able to do the round trip all on a single tank even if no recharge in Tahoe. Net-net: less contact and safer than going to grocery store. |

I always check the weather report. If it looks like it's gonna require chains on the 80, I just go another time. Total fair weather CA attitude.
I also just keep the chains to show CHP. I don't want to actually have to put them on. It sucks to put chains on in a snowstorm. One of the reasons CA costs so much to live is because we don't have to deal with weather situations like that. |

What disclosure is this? Secondly, there is a tire chains option in the TPMS settings. Am I missing something here?

I also had the same disclosure when I took delivery of my car. BMW manual also said something about "fine-link" snow chains, which seems like a regular snow chain is not recommended. |

I ordered that variant. It requires less sidewall area ("it requires only 6.3 mm (1/4″) of operating space in the critical inside sidewall area of the tire (typical Class S products require 15mm)." This may be completely wrong, but in comparing photos and videos it looks like it's less likely to contact the rim. My biggest fear is metal clanking against the rim and damaging it. Will see how it goes. The product code for the Super Z6 @ 275/45-20 is SZ441. For any other sizes you can use their guide.

If you have Prime and at the product page and checkout it show Sunday delivery, you should be good. For me, it shows 6-12 days delivery in both pages.
BTW, I ordered both the SZ441 and ZT741 to compare which one is closer to the sidewall area. |

why not use Autosocks instead? BMW and Subaru recommend not to use the tire chains
I live in Pacific North West and have taken my 2019 X5 with all season bridgestone alanza on and had no issues in snow and icy conditions. |

Seems more EU focused. Not that at all means much, but I would like to avoid any "wtf is this" if snow control becomes an issue on my drive. The product appeals to me though, seems like there's zero damage possibility.

Autosocks are easier to put on and take off but should only be used in case of emergency. Their biggest drawbacks are that driving on dry/rough roads will shred them and they can easily wrap around the axle if they tear. At the end of the day it is better to deal with the hassle of standard chains (the newer versions of which have been much improved from the old ladder style).

Chains arrived, easy to install and they fit well. Hopefully I don't need them, but I'm glad I have them!

Just FYI, if you install the snow chain on the rear wheel, make sure you switch off the rear axle steering. From X5 manual page 367:

The Thule device, while expensive, does look interesting. I found this video showing how they go on and off plus the first-time adjustment that may be needed.
The neat thing is that you can put them on without having to drive at all...they self-center in place as you drive slowly the first 100' or so. To take them off, you do have to drive to get it off of the bottom, though. Seems pretty simple. |

and looking at the website's video...it seems they work really well on unplowed roads. Wonder what their performance would be on plowed but icy roads...like if you travel to a frequented ski resort area like Tahoe and Mammoth...where roads are usually cleared somewhat shortly after a storm. |
