New X5 Wifi Hotspot
Good morning all. Over the weekend I purchased a new 2019 BMW X5 and I am trying to activate the Wifi Hotspot, but have not had any luck doing so.
I connected to the car's wifi and made several attempts to log in to the At&t portal to set up my account, but no success there. My laptop and ipad state simply that there is "No internet connection" I also tried logging into At&t's BMW vehicle specific site, where it asks me my vehicle's phone # which I entered and I received an error stating that I needed to activate the service from within the car... I would imagine owners here have successfully done so, can someone please point me in the right direction? Bmw's connected drive and other sites/apps have not been helpful at all. |

Same issue here, I believe the issue is on AT&T's end. When you go to their site and select a vehicle the only 2019 option they have is a 328i. I don't think their system has been updated for the new X5's yet. Not sure why it would matter as I assume the tech is the same in each vehicle.
I had my dealer resubmit the number and still nothing, next option is to get a specialist in to look at the car, but I don't think that is the issue as they can call the number on my account and it goes to the car. I think we just have to wait for AT&T to catch up given how new the car is. |

https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...Fi_Hotspot.pdf I hadn’t bothered to check this out in advance that you had to pay for the service, I thought it was part of the package. I probably won’t fool with it. Wouldn’t use it much anyway. |

To clarify, this is only for the car to act like a hot spot, nothing to do with using the BMW Connected Drive app to remotely open/start/see camera/update... etc? That's what I thought, but then the AT&T page refers to it as Connected Car plan. (for non AT&T Customers).

I talked to a Genius about this on the phone about a week ago because the AT&T site wasn't recognizing my vehicle's number either. He said he read a BMW bulletin about the issue, they were working on it, and to try in a few days. It still isn't working for me. He did say it doesn't affect the free trial at all which only begins once you are able to signup with AT&T.

So does that mean the Connected Drive functions continue to work indefinitely without any kind of subscription at all with a cell provider?

I think car play and the other connected stuff lasts three years, and then you have to pay... I’m not absolutely sure, though... pretty sure.

Not quite, BMW Connected Drive is the way to connect to your car via the app, lock/unlock the car remotely, see in 3D on your phone, call concierge, BMW assist, etc. It's included for the 1st 4 years (not sure after that). Connected+ and Apple CarPlay are extended versions of this and included for the 1st year, then are $80/yr I believe. None of this is related to data, if you want additional data sent to your car (ie connecting ipads to the internet via your car hotspot) then you need to set up a plan with AT&T for data (this is the piece not currently working). Obviously the latter could be handled by using a data plan on your phone but there could be instances where it's preferable to have data direct to your car rather than through your own phone.

Here I thought the car was using my phone as a Hotspot. Should have known that somebody was going to be making money on this. Would anyone know where the ConnectedDrive Pandora app uses its data from?

It should be from your phone if you don't have car data. But if you have data it will likely default to your car data plan through the wifi first unless you manually turn it off (probably every time).

Still miffed that you have to pay for Apple Carplay, too. $30k cars from other manufacturers include it for free. But a $95k BMW is going to make you pay for it? |

To all subscribed, This was the official response from BMW:
"This is a known issue and has to do with the new iDrive system that is in the vehicle. They are currently working with AT&T to get the issue resolved but they do not have an estimated resolution date yet. " I am pretty shocked that with all of the 2019 X5's that our few local dealer has sold already that more customers would have issue with this service not working at all. |

Its been almost a month of back and fourth with everyone. No luck. It seems that there is an issue, and since this is a feature that they said, "no one uses" it probably will get no attention for some time.
I work from my car quite a bit, and I have become custom to having the hotspot live all the time in my vehicles for laptops, etc. Bummer. |
