X6M clunk noise in the trunk- driving me nuts
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I put the rear seats down to see if it was from the seat latch- nope. Still clunks. I took the cargo cover off to see if the cover was bouncing on the plastic ledges it sits on- nope. Still clunks I checked the spare tire and everything is tight. What the heck can it be? It sounds like plastic hitting plastic. Any only when going over bumps at small speed. Any other notorious rattle/clunk spots? Or is this the suspension washer clunk that sounds like a trunk noise but is actually coming from the sway bars? |

The sway bar issue seems to happen when you change directions with the car. I’ve hunted down rattles and clunks in mine for months. I either found them all or I just got us to it.
There was one rattle people talked about regarding the button that releases the cargo cover. I slipped a piece of felt tape inbeteen the gap on mine. The other more common one was wrapping the trunk close guides with electrical tape Alan |

I have the same noise almost from day 1 that I haven't been able to resolve either. Dealer tried couple different approaches, still same.
I will try what you mentioned about the button Alan. Vanguard, is it driver or passenger side? Mine is driver side. |

Tell them to check the insulation on the boot. This happened with my very first x5 a while ago…. Once they changed out some of the insulation… noise went away

There is a plastic piece that indexes with the spare tire in the trunk. Well that plastic piece is kind of just wedged into the cargo floor liner and free to move around, even with the tire FIRMLY locked in place. With the tire locked in place, I can lift that black piece of plastic and 100% replicate the plastic on plastic rattle i hear when I go over bumps. Now, what is the solution? Have BMW take the liner off and put some padding between this plastic piece and the floor? Or just have them remove this plastic piece? I personally dont see a point, as its free to move, even with the tire around it, so its not really holding the tire in place. Pic attached with the tire removed, exposing this piece of plastic. |

I actually removed that piece on my car when i was hunting down rattles on my X5M. Another option is you can put a towel over it sandwiching between it and the spare.

How can your tire be installed the other end around? The round styrofoam accessory bin is mean to fit inside the wheel.

Yep, my "fix" didn't fix anything. The noise is still there.
Its 100% from the back left area of the trunk, something behind the panels is clunking. Absolutely no clue what it is, the dealer doesn't know either. The solution was to pull off the panels and see whats moving around to cause this noise. Not a fan of that to be honest so I said Id think about it. |

I also had a metal clanking noise going over bumps coming from the driver side cargo wall. If i banged on it with my hand I could replicate the sound so what i did was open the storage door and wedged a thick piece of foam in the backside of the cargo wall and that fixed my noise.
