It holds the charge by not using the battery. No charging is done except through coasting or braking. So indeed it removed the hardware needed to charge via the engine. Probably related to the automatic transmission redesign.

Charging with coasting or breaking uses the same hardware as changing with the engine.

If so then maybe BMW will add charging back in.

that’s not possible. HVAC and some 12V components are completely dependent on the HV battery, so it’s being used to power said functions. can’t rely on regeneration alone to maintain the HV battery level when those functions are operating. (heating alone can be a power sucker.)

I suggest all 50e owners write in to BMW and request the charging function be brought back via a software update.

BMW US headquarters is in NJ...the address should be easy to find.

Regaining the adjustable battery hold functionality might be something that could be enabled via coding...you might consider looking in the BimmerCode options, or sending the author a note asking him if it's possible. IOW, the software switch to enable that functionality MIGHT exist in the software already.

Which menu button?

Should we set a day for a demonstration? We can ask future PHEV owner and 330e owners to join us too

THe stacked list icon...that should bring up a menu...no idea what's on it, though...the manual doesn't say. It's likely context sensitive, so you may need to play a bit to view what you desire.

What happens if you press the Battery Hold button twice?

Not in the car at the moment but I'm pretty sure it turns the mode back off.

I tried the Charging icon after pressing the Battery Hold button and do not see anything regarding a charge level.

You are right it is a simple coding question, not a cost issue for BMW. Similar to what I am trying to achieve for the last 5 months to enable adjusting automatic regen level or completely switch it off - also simple programming issue. I wrote a letter to BMW through our country's BMW company, but no answer yet...

I studied good functions in other PHEVs and asked BMW to enable those in the 45e with simple coding instead of expensive mechanical or electrical changes. Do not know why they still stick to some wierd decisions... My focus was improving fuel efficiency (a lot) by letting coasting mode in electric and hybrid modes and it is also better for my personal taste (and some other improvements). Hopefully they will hear customer's voice once

FWIW, by judicious use of the gas pedal, and watching the power meter, you can coast...it's just not quite as easy as just letting off on the pedal totally. The i3 I owned was the same way...it did not coast on its own...it went from accelerating to cruising, to coasting, to gradually increasing regeneration. The X5 doesn't have anywhere near the level or regeneration, but because it weighs over 2x as much, there's still power to be made with less deceleration at maximum rates.
