Extended Warranty
I have been debating to getting extended warranty for my 2019 G05. Up until now I have owned about 8 BMWs amongst other cars and I have never ever purchased an extended warranty. However, recently my manufacturer warranty expired in May after 4 years of ownership and I never have had any issues except recently in April where a random driver restraint malfunction error popped up. It so happened that I was traveling until June and couldn’t take the car in before my warranty expired (however I reported the error in April itself - just reported to my SA and not diagnosed). Made an apt for June to get it diagnosed and just 4 days before my apt my car got rear ended so it was in the shop for 3 months. Just got it back and BMW NA was nice enough to cover it under warranty even though they could have denied it and left me on the hook for a $2600 bill.
This made me think that with so much electronics in cars these days where such errors can randomly pop up without any fault of the owner maybe it is better to get an extended warranty. Of course BMW wants to sell me one called the platinum plan which covers my car for 5 years or 60k miles more and it covers everything except maintenance but they want to charge me $9500 for it as a one time payment or a monthly plan of $500 down and then 36 months no interest payments of $250 per month. This sounds outrageous to me but then again a far far thought lingers in the mind that what if a couple of things go wrong from the electronic perspective and I end up spending more than $9500 through the next, at least, 4 more years of ownership that I plan to keep the car for. Wanted to get on here and get some suggestions/advice on what is the best route to take? |

I'd put the $9500 towards a new X5

If you go for the extended warranty be sure to read the small print so you will know what is and is not covered. Also remember that extended warranties are like going to Vegas. You are betting that something will go wrong and they are betting it won't. In most cases they are correct because the odds are on their side. That is how they make money.

And no, I do not think the $9,500 price tag is even in the ballpark. I'd invest the $9,500, figure I probably wouldn't need to spend it on the car, but accept that I would be taking a gamble |

Obviously for $9,500 you wouldn't want it but keep in mind what they are offering you is not a BMW backed warranty but rather a third party. BMW Extended Service Plans (their name for an extended warranty) are only available until the new vehicle warranty expires.

Yes, I agree with all of you and that is why in my 25+ years of buying and driving cars I have never bought any extended warranty or maintenance plans. I agree that the price point is just ridiculous and that is why I balked at it as well. The guy selling it to me made a statement - “the cost is $9500 but of course we will never ask you or recommend you to pay that upfront and right now you just have to put $500 to kick start it”. I am like dude I’ll ttyl lol.
Ok so the consensus is not to have any warranty plan at all or go with a 3rd party like endurance? |

Does Fidelity sell warranties for BMW? Many Pcar guys use them with good results.

My guess is that it is a Fidelity Platinum that they are quoting the OP.

If so the Fidelity warranty is highly competitive between dealers. It can be bought for significantly less than $9.5k. Steingold Volvo sells many of them covering multiple brands.

Side note, restraint error can sometimes be corrected at home with no dealer intervention. I fixed it in my driveway and it hasn’t come back.
Having said that, I wouldn’t want this car out of warranty. Not many issues but when they pop up they aren’t cheap. |

samvora Read the fine print. I’m pretty sure that for $9500 you’re getting additional 12 months and 10,000 miles on top of the factory warranty….not additional 60m/60k miles. In which case it’s a bad deal…as bad as they get IMO.

Hit the ignition button 3 times while the vehicle is off. That puts the car in diagnostic mode. Then use the seat controls to move the seat all the way forward, once it’s as far as it goes forward it should push back a little bit, push all the way forward again and hold the button pressing it forward for about another 10 seconds. Then repeat the process but while moving the seat position all the way back. Once it hits as far back as it can go, move it all the way back again and hold the button pushing it back for another 10 seconds. After that you should be able to move the seat normally and the error should go away. I do this with the seat empty, it works every time. Good luck!

I just signed up with Endurance for a 5-year plan for $114 per month for 3 years, then 2 years are payment free. It's not comprehensive but does cover the major mechanical parts and labor. I read the exclusions very closely before signing up. 2019 X5, just purchased a few weeks ago.

No, in order to get a BMW Extended Service Contract it has to be done prior to the new vehicle warranty expiring.

you can shoot Christine a quick email she is very prompt and she can answer your questions based off your vin and info. If the car is out of warranty it most likely is a 3rd party but we personally only sell BMW plans
