The quality doesn't really bother me much, I have volume up a bit but I noticed it goes lower than higher from time to time.... This is what is bothering me... Strange never had this issue before but can say it is constant. I also notice it via Alexa devices in the home which operate over wifi streaming. You can hear it go low to high. I have sent the feedback to Sirius using their online platform.... not holding my breath. HEHE

I listen to Sirius in my wife's GTi and don't hear any of the issues you guys are talking about. I get constant volume from channel to channel and during their interruptions (talking and talking and talking - ugh). Sound quality is good, no crackling, fading, distortion, etc.

Definitely and possibly an inferior (less efficient) codec.

Satellite SiriusXM exhibits significant compression artifacts and poor frequency response. It sounds like it tops out at maybe 12 kHz.

There are a couple variables in play, the X5 and Sirius. You could contact Sirius, explain the issue and see if they have any recommendations for you. At least maybe they can give you information that you can take to BMW. Assuming that avenue doesn't help, then is it possible to demonstrate the issue to your BMW service center? They must have a few Sirius enabled cars that they can use to compare with or if you have it working well in another car, bring it.

All I can say is it works great on our GTi. There are no settings for me to tweak, just turn it on and it plays.

Very interesting, I had not considered that aspect. Thanks.

It’s a limitation of the tech. I experienced the same thing on every system I’ve heard it on. That’s why I use the app with max bandwidth setting. It’s crap at the normal setting although still better than the sat.

This brings up something I need to research a bit... I know the early Bluetooth (if that is what you are using) was very bandwidth limited and quality was even more compressed but think it will be fun to build identifiers on the tech that is now available....

Like this;
SAT; delivers at X
Blue tooth; delivers at X
.....

I use CarPlay which I believe is uncompressed. Bluetooth depends on the sending and receiving device but it seems to be lossy and compressed no matter what and generally in the range of 256-384 kbps using the AAC codec from what I’ve gathered. Sirius sat stations vary from 40-64 kbps with a relative of MP3 as its codec. 64 kbps stereo MP3s sound horrendous so it’s no wonder sat audio is so bad. Had it come about 15 years later they could have used AAC plus and gotten acceptable quality from that bandwidth, but the processing power wasn’t available in the 80s when Sirius and XM were being developed.

Car play uses bluetooth to communicate from the phone to the device. So it will have to follow bluetooth standards? I need to learn more about this....

It’s using WiFi for the audio as I understand it. It might negotiate the connection with Bluetooth.

Interesting read with real world testing you can perform on different sources.

Cool! Classic waveforms for audio testing. Too bad they didn’t test AAC. iPhones don’t support aptx and SBC seems to be mainly used on older devices. There was an online test somewhere to see if you could differentiate between 320 kbps MP3 and lossless flac. I was able to identify the lossless in each example. I just have the HK system but wish I had sprung for the B and W system.

It's too bad the GO5 doesn't have an aux input to bypass the built in DAC.

Are the DACs used the same in the HK and B&W systems? Whatever they are using in the HK system I have seems really good to me. Given how noisy the car environment is, I doubt anyone would be able to discern the difference between DACs anyway.

Adding a vote for the B&W system. I listened to it in an X7, playing FLAC Mark Knopfler's Ragpicker's Dream. The brush on the cymbal sounded live, not amplified live but standing next to it live. The same setup on the G05 with HK, brand new, and I couldn't even hear the cymbal as an instrument.

You don't know what you're missing until you know.

If you can find out the album and or song that the engineers used when designing the system then play it in flac or on CD it is the best way to dial in the settings. When B&O designed their system for the S8 and Q7 they used "Money" by Pink Floyd. Then the remainder of the album for fine tuning however the demo song in the vehicles when it was first released over a decade ago was "Money". When tuned properly you could hear every instrument and it was clear all the way to the "MAX" setting. There was never really any hard hitting bass but clarity throughout. So I have dubbed the BO audio package as "Bass Omitted" but outside of that minor gripe it was a fabulous system but at $6300 a pop it was hard to justify for most people. If it was available for the vehicle I was purchasing I optioned it. For me it was a must have option as is any audio upgrade. Last comment on the matter; the Meridian 3D Surround system in the Full Size Range Rover Supercharged A/B is by far the best damn system I have heard yet. 29 speakers. Strategically placed. In harmony and true surround summoning 1900w of audio insanity. the rear passengers have a speaker in the face then one above their head then three in the door panel just on side then repeat for the other. It is wild. I think the #1 product at the moment (from my experience).

Using Amazon HD app, it seems like the DAC installed in the G05 with the B&W system maxed out at 48khz/22bit.

G05 cabin noise isolation is pretty good. Of course YMMV, depending on you environment.

That's still pretty good though, right? Technically anything higher than 16-bit/44.1kHz is considered hi-res?

Technically Hires refers to 96 or 192 KHz. but anything above CD quality (44.1KHz/16) is considered Hires for marketing purposes. It's just too bad we can't bypass the DAC.
