2022 X5 M50i Oil Filter "Kit" Mystery

OK, I have changed my own oil in my cars for 30+ years. I have a F30 and F10 + a X167 Mercedes I do all the time.

I just did my "break-in" oil change on my M50i built on 2.2.2022. It has about 1200 miles on it, I know it's not required but I do it just because.

I believe there is currently no viable oil filter kit yet for this car. (again unless the dealer has some new SKU to reference)

Now before I explain, I have not gone into the dealer to check.

I ordered the BMW OEM part that is spec'd for a 21 (11427583220). Many of the sites on the Internet (Amazon, RockAuto, etc, even FCP Euro and ECS Tuning) don't have a drop down yet for 2022 and most don't seem to find my VIN.

I also ordered a MANN filter HU 8007 Z, and a Mahle 353/7. I could not find a Hengst SKU.

Here's the issue...The oil filter housing has a drain plug, sort of like I have seen on Toyotas. Which was really nice in that you could mostly drain the filter before pulling the housing. The catch is that drain plug has a o-ring on it. Very much like the tiny o-ring that is on my N26 and N55 engines oil filter housing. However, the BMW, Mahle, and Mann kits had a bigger o-ring in them. I assume this would be for the 2021, or maybe build just earlier than mine.

The filter that was from the factory as a Mahle 353/7 (pictured). So the filter, the crush washer, and the large o-ring in BMW, Mann, and Mahle kits I bought were correct, it's that tiny o-ring that seemed to be wrong.

So I just re-installed the plug with the old o-ring, but would be nice to have a correct kit to buy. I might just need to be patient.

Maybe even the drain plug is a disposable one--like the pan drain plug on my N26?

Anyone else crazy like me and already performed an oil change on a recent build M50i?

One more interesting point: RockAuto said they had a filter match for 22's built up to 12/21. So maybe this housing is new for this CY?

Attached are some pics of the housing, and the o-ring comparison (sorry it's blurry). The small one is from a N55 kit but it really looked identical to the one that was on the housing--that I left on.

I don’t think I saw a drain plug in my 2021. It was a mess when changing a filter. Wonder if I can retrofit a housing with the plug.

Quick update, it looks like the correct PN/SKU for the BMW brand filter kit is:

11 42 5 A33 C42

After trying about 3 different online BMW order forms at various dealerships, and all 3 getting cancelled due to no stock I found one @ BMW of Southampton. No online ordering but I spoke to a really nice guy to place a phone order. He confirmed my VIN was correct for this part and knew about the filter housing change in recent builds.

I also ordered an individual stem seal o-ring to see if I could use that with the kits that were for the pre-December 2021 built X5 M50i. Until I get the correct kit above I won't know if the o-ring is correct.

The PN(s)/SKU(s) for that are: 11421744001 or 11427549573

Finally, Hengst does show a cross reference for that kit above but I ordered it and the o-ring is not correct. Mann and Mahle still don't show and option nor a cross reference.

If all you need is an O-ring you can get them here
https://www.theoringstore.com/store/

Use Buna-N material for anything that contacts oil.

Ok, so I have somewhat solved the mystery. I did get a BMW branded kit (Mahle filter) that is correct.

As mentioned above it's SKU: 11 42 5 A33 C42

They are really hard to find, I paid ~$47 shipped from NY to OH. Ground shipping was expensive for some reason.

So hopefully they start showing up at local dealers and the big 3 OEMs have kits they start selling.

Also, one theory I had that is now proven is the plastic oil filter housing drain plug is a consumable, the kit included a new one with the o-ring already attached.

Attached are pictures for comparison, of the kit that fit 2021 and older M50i (right) and the new kit (left). Everything is the same but the plastic drain plug.

I hope this helps for any of you that are going to to a change on their's this year.

Still not sure what the small o-ring that is in separate in the kit is for, will figure that out with my next change which will probably be late summer.

My 2021 came with the housing without the drain in it. After reading your post and another post in this forum, I found the part number for the housing (11-42-5-A34-A34) with the drain and the OEM filter you provided, which now only costs around $15 bucks, and plan on changing over on my next oil change.

And you know for what what the small o-ring is for?

I won’t know until I do the oil change, which won’t be for another 5.5 months. I’m pretty hard on the car so plan on moving the oil changes up from the recommended 10k or 1yr intervals.

I'm sticking with OEM spec'd oil until my warranty expires and then changing over the 5w40, just in case something were to happen. Seems like BMW will look for any excuse to not warranty something and will run tests on the oil if the engine fails for any reason.

I'm due for a mid cycle oil change between service schedule.
I plan to stick with OE LL01FE but if this was out of warranty and if one had oil around...I would not hesitation to use LL01, CAFE aside
