my SA didn't say how many battery cells within that one module were faulty, but like jad03060 stated, BMW replaces the whole module even if only one battery cell is faulty. replacing 1 out of 12 modules isn't bad. as of 3 days ago, there's a guy on the FB group who needs 4 modules replaced (dunno his vehicle build date). he's currently waiting for all the components to arrive.

my SA emailed me on 11/16 they had everything to diagnose; he emailed again 2 days later that they ordered the components, so i would think the diagnostic took place in a day.
Thanks for the info.

The internal resistance on say a small battery used in a Tesla has some advantages, but to me, I feel BMW made the wiser choice with using larger batteries. The X5 has a few hundred cells, so not that many connections...a Tesla battery pack can have over 8000 cells in it which means many more parts and connections that could become defective, and for cooling, they're all bonded together in a big block.

SS batteries will help, but while they're getting closer, breakthroughs are being made regularly, they aren't ready for prime-time, large scale, yet...soon, maybe by the next major update but probably on a smaller scale at first.

It's kind of a pain to drop the battery assembly on the X5 and takes a special jig and lift assembly. Not something you could safely do on your own, and the dealership needs special training and equipment to perform the task.

Update for my 45e

Well, I've made the move to Las Vegas, so I couldn't go to the SoCal dealer where I bought my 45e.
But over the thanksgiving holiday my car finally heralded the on-screen notice to get the car into the dealer.
So I called the BMW LV and they said they'll test my car this week and order any modules that are required - he said to expect the modules to take 6 weeks to arrive (in the meanwhile, they give me my car back, and only hold it for a day this week to test)
I'll let you all know.

Update
The BMW in Vegas did the test and the SA said 8 modules needed replacement - but the paperwork says modules 1-12 need ... minus #6 module need replacing ?
They'll have to order parts.

looks like although only 8 modules need to be replaced, they're just gonna replace all 12 modules

i only needed 1 battery module replaced (comprised of 16 cells) which was completed on 11.30.2021. so far so good. the most immediate observation was seeing 2-3kWh less than previous charging totals (I was seeing 2-3kWh more before the repair compared to other users charging from the same capacity as mine) which makes me ponder if I was sitting on a veritable thermal event waiting to happen given the higher-than-average charging losses I was seeing are most commonly in the form of heat. *whew*
