Side drainage?

There must be a drain near the doors ... any advice around avoiding the dirt buildup this results in?

The doors drain from the corners. I clean the marks off with paint thinner as soap and water doesn’t touch it. Not sure you can avoid. It even sticks to my ceramic coating.

Waxy gunk coming out of the door drain is Cosmoline (rust preventative) applied during manufacturing. Most of it gets washed off at VPC and ends up inside the door where it seeps out - more so during summer months when it gets hot.

You can use a mild detergent or solvent to clean it off. Just don't let it sit for too long as it'll harden and becomes a pain in the arse to clean it off later.

Like the others have said, this is normal cosmoline warming up and oozing out. All my BMW's, in fact all my German cars have done this, I use kerosine to clean it because it won't attack the paint.

So the door drain is...just a hole in the door? I would have expected a little more polish from BMW. Audi Q7:

But likely not significant in function.

The Q7 and major of Audi door designs are different than BMW. Audi uses a clamshell door design, where the entire door covers rocker panel, and necessitates a different design than BMW's traditional door above rocker panel.

It's like this on a 100K X7, sure BMW could design the drain nicer, Audi's been know for little details, but BMW's door drains has been like this for decade.

Just look at the way the steel is finished in the corner, above the plastic trim (one could imagine what's under the plastic... Lol) . Like a weekend warrior built it.

The VW ownership/service experience proves just how amateurish VW is compared to BMW.

As I recall, the drain from my F15 X15 was MUCH less apparent and did not expose any metal edges. I personally think the G05 designers took a step back in time to the 20th century for this door design. But that's just me.
