Best all season tire that's good in the snow

I have a 2021 X5 that came with Perelli Pzero summer run flat tires. Fronts are 275 40 R21 and rears are 315 35 R21. We got a crazy snow storm last week and I slid off the road and hit a curb breaking my front passenger side lower control arm. These tires did horrible in the snow, so I'm considering putting all season tires on it. We normally don't get much snow but this year has been a fluke. So I don't want or need winter tires. Plus I have no where to store extra rims and tires. Does anyone know of or can recommend a good all season tire that's good in the snow that fits my X5? Thanks

Sorry to hear. You should never take out summer tires in the snow. Summer tires become dangerous in temps less thna 40-45 degrees as the rubber compound doesn't handle well in cold temps. Unfortunately with the 21"s you are really limited in all-season tire options if you want to go with OEM spec; one of your only easy to find options will be the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All-Season. Also note these tires I believe are non-run flat and your ride is not equipped with a spare.

Agree with the above unfortunately. Only the Pirelli Scorpion Verde's come to mind in the OEM spec.

not much choice for all-season run flats, but Continental has a run flat in those sizes. I forget the model. I'm in the same predicament in Virginia. my dealer just ordered me a set.

I contemplated sizing up to FRONT 275/45R21 and REAR 315/40R21, but there is concern about clearance with the air suspension. there's some really good Michelin run flats in these sizes.

Thanks, I'll look into the Continentals!

If you're sizing up using the factory 20/21/22 wheel+tire specs, there are no clearance issues with air suspension.

even at the lowest setting? also, is it safe to say the difference in circumference sizing up won't affect the speedo/tach significantly? even if not, because i don't have a space saver spare, i prefer staying with run flats, which again is limited for my 21" wheels. i now wish i chose 20" initially.

When you size up the profile of the tire decreases so the overall outside diameter of the wheel is approximately the same. Now if you size up AND hold the profile your OD will increase which will effect the accuracy of the speedo but only by very little.

You want an "All Weather" not "All Season" tire. Unfortunately the two best are not available in 21" and/or to fit your rears. (Michelin CrossClimate SUV and Nokian WRG4). Sell the staggered 21's and get a set of square 20's - far more tire options, smoother ride, lower noise, less pothole damage, cheaper, and so on.

Edit: Snow is not the only reason to make the switch. You may have damaged your tires by driving them in cold temps. Summer compounds cannot handle below freezing temps and can easily crack which requires their immediate replacement.

Yes, even in the lowest setting. Both xDrive40i and M50i with 20/21/22" options are available with 2VR Air Suspension.

The overall diameter for 20/21/22 OEM tire/wheel is approximately 29.7F/R" for 20"/21" and 29.4F/R29.6" for 22" = -0.3% difference in diameter compared to 20"/21", no significant impact on speedo/tach/xDrive.

does anyone know if the BMW factory 20" option is a staggered or squared setup on the 45e? mine is 21" staggered; did BMW go this way because of the higher weight in the rear due to the PHEV battery?

i'm highly considering changing to a square 20" setup but want to make sure it's safe to do so. if i go aftermarket wheels, what offset should i get to maintain factory stance?

My 20" is a square set-up with OEM Bridgestone Alenza tires (275/45 20). Still thinking about getting a winter set but not enough snow/cold this year to warrant for the occasional ski trip. Will probably just end up switching out the Alenza's for Michelin CrossClimate and put them back on for lease turn-in.

Factory 20" is square. For International markets the factory 20" is staggered.

BMW SAV have always had staggered setups with +1 or +2 wheel upgrade options. It's not due to having a PHEV battery - just adhering to an archaic philosophy of only offering performance tire options on plus options in uncommon tire sizes to maintain performance driving dynamics.

There's a rational for it but collides with consumers who like the look but need all season traction.

temperatures here are currently 20-50s ºF, so after seeing everyone's comments/input and how i'm running a summer tire setup (i honestly didn't know they were summer tires when i configured my build), i got pretty nervous knowing the dangers. since snow/ice isn't that major in my area nor are there any run-flat offerings in all-weather tires, i've ordered my 20" square all-season setup. thanks, gentlemen!

I have the 20" square setup on my 40i. OEM Alenzas are actually doing quite well in the snow. I'm in Minnesota so when I end up replacing, I'll likely switch to CrossClimates or Continental LX25s, both of which are highly rated for winter performance according to Tire Rack.

I'll likely put the Nokian WRs on my wife's Volvo. Basically a performance winter tire that can be used in the summer, but the handling trade off is too large for my X5 and driving style.

Agree. I don't mind the Alenzas but would much prefer an All Weather with the 3PMSF symbol to avoid chain restrictions when going to Tahoe (eg. CrossClimate SUV or WR4 SUV).

has anyone seen any all-weather (not all-season) run flat offerings for a 20" square setup? I've not been lucky

I don't think they exist

I have Michelin cross climate suv tires and love them. Use tire rack. I had Michelin defenders on my GLE. Im in the Chicago area and they worked without issue during the last snow.

If you want to keep your 21's, you could just run 275/40's on all 4. They fit fine on the 10.5" rear wheel. There are a few all season choices in that size.

2022 X5 40 AWD - Winter Tires...? snow chains?

I just purchased a 2022 X5...and will have the Perelli Scorpion Ice Snow tire installed for my winter driving.

I live in Oregon and under certain road conditions the Oregon Dept of Trans says " carry chains " ...

Any recommendations for chains?

And comments regarding performance and reliability of this tire in winter conditions...and Not Blizzard...I will stay home?

Thank you
