I owned a 2009 X6 and put 155,000 miles on it and bought a 2015 X5, just sold it with 163,000 miles on it and bought a 2021 X6. Having owned both I would say the X6 is more of a sports car, obviously there is a sacrifice with space. My first X6 was a 4 seater which was a problem, that's not the case on the 2021. I considered another X5 and when I went to the dealer they had a White (I always buy white cars) 2021 X5 pulled up for me to test drive and I parked next to it. That was what made my decision.......I know I could tell the F15 vs the G05 and I am sure everyone on this board can too, but I felt I would be driving the same car for the next 5 years and I wanted a change. So other than the difference in space, I would say go by which one looks best to you !

A bit more detail: I took delivery of my X6, M50i in late March, 2020. Here's a link to my post back then: X6 M50i. (Note: I did PCD this past August...still need to post some pics from that!!) I previously had a 2010, X5, 35d (diesel E70) that I drove until I got a 2015, X5, 35d (diesel F15). I drove that until this past March and got the 2020, X6 M50i (G06). I still have the F15...my wife is driving that now! (I bought the E70 used in the Fall of 2012, when it was 2-years old. I bought the F15 new, as well as the G06.) So, lots of experience in X5's and about 8 months in the X6. Again, absolutely no regrets on going to the X6 or the M50i. A few thoughts related to your questions: - There are very few X6's where I live, so it's a bit of a unicorn, especially as an M50i - With the new G06, the loss of headroom in the backseat is very, very minimal. Honestly, I thought it would be more significant. It's not... - Definitely recommend DHP. (My build details are linked in the link I'd noted above...) - Cargo space. There's definitely less. If you do some searches, I think you can find a post or two that notes how many fewer liters or cubic ft. it is...honestly, I haven't had much of an issue with anything. It holds my golf clubs about the same as my X5s. I do probably fold down part of the back seat more often than I did with the X5...The one difference you do notice quickly is the height of the storage area. If you want to put something very high in, you're taking out the cover and folding down a seat quickly. Even then, there is less height... One thing that I haven't seen mentioned that is a notable difference between the X5 and the X6 is visibility, especially looking backwards or through your rear-view mirror. There is much, MUCH, less visibility. Since it's an SAC with a coupe roof, you have coupe backdoor windows and while it's a really big piece of glass on the rear hatch, it's pretty small viewing above the back seat and ceiling. Whenever I hop in the F15, I'm somewhat surprised by how much light and viewing angles it has when backing up. To compensate, get all of the technology (360 cameras, etc.) so that you have more visibility out the back. Even the A-pillars are a bit more pronounced as you look forward and you loose a bit in a forward view. (Note: This was my only concern, which led me to drive a 125 miles to test drive an X6 before I ordered last January. My local dealer didn't have one...I wanted to feel the difference in views, especially out the back.) Driving wise, the G05 and G06 are pretty similar. I think the G06 is a bit more planted, due to it being a bit wider, a bit lower and a slightly lower center of gravity, but some of that is probably just DHP, etc. (Again, search for this on the forum. It's been debated before. The X5 owners/lovers will say "No way, it's the same drive train.". The X6 owners/lovers will say it corners better, etc.) |

2020 X6 M50 here. Never wished for a second that I had an X5. Don't get me wrong, I like the X5, but I love my X6. Haven't seen another one either, see a few previous styles, but haven't seen one like mine out and about, I like that.

Finally got to sit in an X6 at the dealership this week. It was not nearly as bad as some reviewers have said. You do have to bend a bit more to get in the back, but once you're in there, it feels fine for anyone under 6'2.
As for the rear cargo area, the front to back space is about on par with the X5 but the downside is there's not as much height available for storage. |

I think that pretty much sums it up. The X6 is a car you'll feel strongly about aesthetically speaking - be that a strong like or strong dislike - but at least you feel something. In contrast, the X5 is safe from a design perspective - perfectly adequate and doesn't evoke strong feelings either way. Doesn't offend anyone and doesn't impress anyone. No one 'hates' the look of the X5, but I don't think anyone really loves it either. Its design is just a reflection of its utility.

This is my opinion - but I can't believe BMW put those ugly rear ends on the X4s and X6s on the road. Reminds me of what they did with the 5 Series Gran Turismo and then the 6 series. 80% of people hated it, and then you had the 20% who got it because they were marked down because of the 80% that hated it and the sales tanked. This is JUST AN OPINION. I know there are probably some people who feel the same way about the X5 |

Never has been before - all cars have a market. There are less of them around - less of them manufactured, less buyers but also less sellers. In terms of price, they cost a bit more than the X5 when new, and that carries through to second hand sales.

No guarantee of the price difference being recovered on resale or trade in. You can be fairly sure that you will see less for the X6 due to its styling which is not that favorable and has hindered its sales. Expect 5 cents on a dollar for various options and packages.

Expect to be completely disappointed when you try to sell or trade that .
Very niche vehicle. Very niche vehicle. The dealers will completely work you like the car has the plague Fine to lease x4/x6x . I would never finance again . Learned this the hard way last year on an x4. |

I too learnt the hard way about buying new outright on a seemingly safe purchase of a G30 5 series in 2017. After seeing the value of that at 3 years, I quickly decided to never buy a new car outright again, no matter how 'safe' it seemed... |

I don’t know how relevant this is but I did just trade in a my X5 50i M-Sport that was almost totally loaded with 5800 miles. I traded it in on a fully loaded X7 M50i this past August. I got top dollar for my X5. Admittedly it was in immaculate condition and optioned up the right way. My dealer dropped off my X7, picked up my X5 and drove it strait inside the showroom from my garage. It sold in only 3 days. They had other 2019 pre owned X5’s and even a X5 50i base model that had been sitting for awhile.
What this tells me is condition and options mean a lot on what you will get in trade in. It also reflects on its desirability for the dealership to sell. Base model lease turn ins are a dime a dozen. Fully or well optioned up vehicles are much more rare and the dealerships actually want them and will pay top dollar in trade. I think if it’s a X5 or X6, you engine size and options are what will determine how enthusiastic your dealer will want to give you top dollar on a trade. |
