My iPhone charges normally on the Apple MagSafe charger every night at home as well, but the same charger (different unit) when used in my G05 overheats the same phone. Difference is that when at home there is no CarPlay or Navigation running vs while in the car.

So looking at the responses thus far, I am pretty confident that its the poor thermal management of many phones and not really an issue with G05 wireless charger...

The charging tray has poor heat management, but car play, navigation, etc. are pretty stressful operations on any phone. Throw in a case, and wireless charging becomes less efficient where that heat ends up warming the phone. Then, the alignment LED is hard to see, and it may not be centered very well, that makes charging less efficient.

I use an Apple magsafe puck plugged into the usb-c in the center console and it works fine for me: I have an iPhone 15 Pro in a leather case. While I rarely use it for nav, I am usually streaming music or on a call and always have Waze running in the background. The phone charges fairly quickly and barely gets warm, whereas same use case in the G05 charger would get very hot and occasionally even shut down.

The one difference may be that I usually don't leave the phone in the closed center console, but instead have the puck attached to the passenger side armrest with velcro so may be getting better heat dissipation in that case. However, even when it's been in the center console it's never shut down on me, nor do I remember it being unusually warm to the touch when i've taken it out.

The wireless charger is junk.

When it works it charges very slow. It gets very hot eventually and the light will turn red because it is overheating.

It's not the phone. It's the wireless charger.

Has anyone tried using the BMW charger for their phone but not connecting to CarPlay and see if they get the same overheating?

That is me. My phones are not connected to Carplay or Android auto. Reason is 45e cannot priority whose phone to connect to when my wife and I are both in the car. You would think whoever's profile is being use, the phone in that profile will be prioritize, but it is not. So to prevent pissing wife off, I am not using these great features. My phones do get very warm when just charging and not doing any else, warmer than I feel confident about. I do have a case for my phone, very thin one. They never get warm on most other wireless charging pads.

Don't use car play or Android auto, charges fast, no overheating.

This is basic stuff here. The more you ask the phone to do, the more it heats up. Most phones aren't designed to remove heat well. They're disposable devices that people change out every year or two in most cases. The manufacturers don't care how hot they get and how it affects lifespans, they've got people brainwashed into a consistent replacement cycle.

Some cars might blow cold air at your phone to try to cool it, but that's them accepting that consumers are more likely to blame them for a failure by a company like apple that dabbles in slave labor and has multiple times been found to doing really unethical things with the phones to convince people to upgrade more often.

If your iPhone is getting extremely warm while on the charger, the first thing I'd check is that you have the latest version of iOS. They definitely updated some things relating to the charging over the first few versions of iOS 17.

Apparently there's also a signal booster / repeater built in there, not sure if that has any effect on heat as well. Has anyone even noticed improved signal when placed on the charging pad?

The actual boost hardware is back in the boot, but the signal is coupled to the external antenna on the roof as well. Maybe not that useful for some, but drive out where cellular coverage is marginal, and it can make a big difference.

I have. I don't use car play preferring the iDrive interface. The phone does not get as hot, but it is warm and it also doesn't really charge or charges very slowly. I'm going to do this more to confirm this post.

this is not a phone problem. I have an iPhone 13 mini and it is, like you say OP, a microwave after running carplay and maps for more than 15, 20 min. I have seen people complain about this with ALL types of phones, not just iPhones.

I tried the same cradle charger I use for my Samsungs for a work iPhone, and the iPhone got extremely hot where the Samsungs never have.

Different resistance levels in the charging coils I would guess.

Yesterday I went on a 123 mile roundtrip. Made a point of keeping the iphone 14 in the charging tray the duration, door to the tray open. Streaming music but no other use including carplay. Heated up nicely but not in danger of shutting down. Also, did not charge. Was at 85% when I placed it on the try and 86% two hours later. Is there something about this charger that caused the screen to stay active? This would explain the heat and lack of charge.

I wireless charge at home and the phone screen is not active does not heat up at all.

sometimes. Sometimes streaming audio books. Sometimes not doing anything. No times does the phone heat up.

As I had stated in my original post, I used the Apple (original) MagSafe disc in the car while using my phone normally with apple play and navigation, and just like the BMW charger, the phone started to overheat even with the apple charger.

I have the same Apple MagSafe charger on my bedside table and use it every night with no issues - the difference is that at that time the phone is not used for any activity.

Lastly, when the phone is charged in car using a wire the phone remains cool and charges normally even with CarPlay and all.

So, in my opinion the culprit is not the BMW charger but inductive charging that perhaps uses a substantial amount of processing power which when coupled other high resource activities like CarPlay, Navigation etc heat up the phone quickly - clearly pointing to heat management issue in most phones.

My OnePlus 10 Pro gets warm, it's in a case, but even on a 500 mile road trip using AA it stayed charged and never shut down.

I used wireless charging once in my LCI and that was it. iPhone was too hot for my liking so I use only USB charging since them.

Is there a way to easily/safely disconnect the wireless charging tray so I can put my phone on the tray without it overheating?

Simply putting your phone there facedown………..😆

I think I start the similar thread like two years ago with the overheating issue. Gave up the wireless charging tray all at once……..using other Meg safe charger and no issue since.

Thanks for sharing this post/thread - some really useful information there.

I too would like to know (like the poster above) how to disable wireless charging so at least the tray can be used for other purposes or even storing the phone.

I am sure there are some great threads from the past as in the link above but when I try to go within the "General Topics" I can only see unto 89 pages that go back to early 2023 - How do I go further back? Is there an archive that I am missing?
