Combined a whopping 82", 5" more than the X5.

I'd stick with Lexus in a heartbeat if it wasn't so damn ugly.
The engine Toyota uses is an abomination too. Front legroom really doesn't matter past 40" where is where the majority of the space you're complaining about is coming from. 0.8" in the rear is nothing to write home about

For us real tall guys, 40" is nothing. Drove the Cayenne today, it has around 1" of extra space front legroom over the F15 and over 2" more than the G05. Did my measurements the old fashioned way.

Still shaking my head that BMW reduced the space in the G05.

Cayenne is pricey, but a very, very nice ride.

Not surprised given what i uncovered with the X3, still won't sway my lust for the X7.
I spent some time in the X7 at CES. Definitely not sorry I got the X5. The X7 didn't feel as quick and the X5 is definitely way more sporty. Only plus of the X7 is space. Interior accoutrements were identical.

I think its because the RX is based off a FWD platform, the BMW on the other hand is on a RWD based platform, and needs extra space to cram an Inline 6 or a V8 under the hood.

I can see that potentially being an issue. I drove a Cayenne S, they're very nice but lack the interior refinement of the X5 in my opinion. I don't like the weird touch like buttons Porsche went with.

It's an excellent engine - kick butt acceleration, super reliable, runs on cheap regular gas, smooth and quiet and I get 23 mpg average. Bought mine in 2012 and haven't done anything more than change the oil every 7,000 miles or so using non synthetic oil.

Are you talking about the V6 used by Lexus? It's nothing to write home about in my experience but I've only driven and ridden around in Lexus SUVs never owned any. I prefer the B58 I6 for 6cyl based on experience, that little guy has a fire side but is also efficient.

If the X5 could have Seat that slid further back it would really help even just 1 inch.

If you have people over 6ft in the front and back it could be a problem. I am 5'10 and where I sit in the front seat I went to the back and plenty of room. So no issue for me.

Agree with this. My teenage girls at 5'7" are fine back there.

Ummm... one of the big points of the 7-series is the increased 2nd row legroom over the 5er. I sure wish BMW would do the same thing in the X-series. I'd love an X7 with 7-series like 2nd row legroom. (not interested in 3rd row)

There's ample legroom in the X5 for most people's needs. the 7 Series is a car you get driven around in hence the rear legroom being massive

+1. The X5 now finds itself behind many other SUVs in total legroom. The solution was simple, make the X5 a two row and X7 a three row.

Yep. The X5 falls behind most luxury SUV's in combined legroom which really sucks. My current Lexus has more and so does the 2019 RX350 by a whopping 4.8". Acura MDX bests it too. Even Consumer Reports made mention of it in their March issue saying the rear seat is too low causing one's knees to stick up. BUT..... CR crowns this car King of the SUV's which is refreshing.

From the outside, it even looks smaller as compared most other SUVs like the MDX, JGC and etc ( maybe not the RX) but the trade off is a better more sportier ride. To each his own.

Since you are 6'3" you are obviously going to have a different perspective. I don't think BMW or any other car manufacture is going to build their small and medium size SUVs with a 6'3" customer's comfort as one of their primary design criteria.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around you calling the X3 almost dead last. If you are going to make claims like that, why not entertain us with a fact or two showing how you arrived at that conclusion.

I guess that is par for the course with this thread since the OP called the space lame and cited a Top Speed article as his source when it turned out the Top Speed article was way off in the cargo specs.

Look, the X5 and the X3 aren't going to be for everybody. They were designed for a certain market in mind. If space is an issue, there are plenty of other excellent choices. Its a great time to be a car buyer.
Happy to oblige, maybe the OP of this thread is onto something.

Here is a snippet of the X3 forum, dead last in its class for rear legroom.

https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...8;postcount=63

For the X5 Autogefuhl also complained on rear legroom of X5, less than Cayennes and new GLE, see their YouTube videos.

In conclusion having sat and researched I suspect from BMW marketing research of their customers they decided to prioritize trunk space for the car over rear legroom for the X5/3.

I am not knocking BMW, it's just surprising given the size increases from last gen. Front legroom adequate for 6 footers which matters most!
Going to throw in my two cents, as I went from a F15 X5 to an Audi S6 and back into a G01 X3. (and probably adding a G05 X5 later this year or early next). We test drove the SQ5 and while, on paper, there is more room in the rear seat area, that just isn't true. Could not fit a rear facing convertible car seat in the SQ5, fit no problem in the G01 X3 (I am 5'8", so the driver's seat was back where I was comfortable driving). Also, the SQ5 cargo hold is considerably smaller. Did not drive a GLC, as the cargo hold is non-existent and I didn't like the MB dated interior (2018 models). Tldr; dimensions on paper mean nothing, try out the vehicles yourself.

Wouldn't an Audi Q7 be the direct competitor to the new X5?

Yep, albeit a little cheaper and no console storage space which we couldn't tolerate.

It also needs refresh which is coming this year. The Q7 really falls behind in a lot of ways.
